Well, as I've continued poking around all the options so I can make it
the most familiar to me, I found the Window Layout option.

I've tried a few of the layouts and the one which seems to work the best for
me is the 5th one (the three vertical panels) with a very large screen area.


I'm getting there.  The only thing I could wish for now is for Free Agent
to have a better looking GUI. :)

It seems to be optimized for speed (lots of good keyboard shortcuts) and
reliability more than beauty.

BTW, if you futz with the conflibberjibbets enough, it can get to look pretty
good.  I recommend:

   Options > General Preferneces > Display:
      Show Tool Bar                     - yes
      Show Status Bar                   - yes
      Tab Spacing                       - 8 characters
      Quoted Text Markers               - >
      Scroll Margins                    - 2 rows
      Show Author's full email address  - yes

   Options > General Preferneces > Fonts:
      Browser              - MS Sans Serif 8pt
      Variable-Pitch Body  - Lucida Console 8pt
      Fixed-Pitch Body     - Lucida Console 8pt
      Message List         - MS Sans Serif 8pt
      Message List Subject - MS Sans Serif Bold 8pt
      Printer              - Lucida Console 8pt

   Options > General Preferences > Colors:
      Normal Lines                 - Black
      Unread Messages              - Bright Red
      Highlighted Unread Messages  - Bright Blue
      Normal Text                  - Black
      Quoted Text                  - Dark Blue

   Options > General Preferneces > Navigation:
      Skip to next unread message jumps to ...     - yes
      Marking or ignoring a message skips to ...   - yes
      Watching an unread message skips to ...      - yes
      Skipping to next unread group marks ...      - NO
      Double-clicking a message launches ...       - no
      Single-Key Read views next unread ...        - yes
      Automatically mark messages read             - Whenever visible

   Options > General Preferneces > Message List:
      Enable threading by subject                           - yes
      Start a new thread when a follow-up subject changes   - NO!
      Show threads initially collapsed                      - no
      Automatically expand threads containing new messages  - yes
      Follow-Up Indentation                                 - 2 characters
      Maximum Follow-Up Level                               - 15

   Options > Posting Preferneces > General:
      Line Length                                           - 76 characters
      Validate email addresses                              - yes
      Save sent messages in outbox                          - yes
      Include original text in follow-ups and replies       - YES
      Quote original text in forwarded email                - no
      Prefix for Quoted Lines                               - >  (> + 1 space)
      Introductions:
        Followup Usenet Msg   - In %newsgroups%, %from% writes:\n
        Reply to Usenet Msg   - In %newsgroups%, you wrote:\n

   Group > Default Properties > Marking Read:
      When retrieving new message headers   - Do NOT mark any existing...read

      (these two are very important; the shipping default setting is
      horrendously stupid)

The rest don't really matter too much, IMHO...
