I've tried a few of the layouts and the one which seems to work the best for
me is the 5th one (the three vertical panels) with a very large screen area.

It seems to be optimized for speed (lots of good keyboard shortcuts) and
reliability more than beauty.
BTW, if you futz with the conflibberjibbets enough, it can get to look pretty
good. I recommend:
Options > General Preferneces > Display:
Show Tool Bar - yes
Show Status Bar - yes
Tab Spacing - 8 characters
Quoted Text Markers - >
Scroll Margins - 2 rows
Show Author's full email address - yes
