I think trn uses ( ) to show cancelled and expired articles, like this: ( )--( )--[1]+-( )--[1] |-[1]--[1] \-[1] It wouldn't be difficult to check whether an article still exists and display a non-link (...) (26 years ago, 17-Oct-98, to lugnet.admin.general)
