The big part of it (for me) has been the 'greatest adventurer movies'
threads. I don't think it's actually going AGAINST the LUGNET rules, but I
think the appropriate place for this should be lugnet.off-topic.fun, instead
of lugnet.adventurers. A lot of the conversation seems to be what movies
people like and dislike, as opposed to how each movie relates to Lego...
Hence, I'd put it in off-topic. And again, when it's just a couple messages
here and there, that's ok, but it's really gotten out of hand in my mind.

Please see my post on this topic.

The other thing is the 'who has the most posts' idea. To quote an earlier
message you posted:
We need your ideas, input, pictures of creations and general banter and
repartee in order to make this the most lively and entertaining posting
group on lugnet. • And later in the same post:
Don't let Starwars continue to dominate.  Last week we had very close to
the same amout of posts they did. And certainly we can beat out the castle
and space groups.

This was tongue in cheek and I am truly sorry if I offended anyone with it.  I
was joking and I guess I should have made that more clear.

But perhaps the most annoying thing is related to the last point. Things
like:
http://www.lugnet.com/general/?n=8931
http://www.lugnet.com/off-topic/fun/?n=3299
The 1st one didn't seem to have anything to do with Adventurers, but you
cross-posted it there, I assume just so to aid your cause of 'beating' the
other groups.
The 2nd one annoys me even more, though, because someone had already
appropriately moved the thread to lugnet.off-topic.fun, and you cross-posted
your reply back to lugnet.adventurers...

I have made contact with people I now consider friends on LUGNET and knew that
they could help me with the first one and may be interested in the second.  If
my postings on LUGNET annoy you so much I again am sorry.  Perhaps you should
let some of the anger and annoyance go.  This is not about saving lives or
reinventing the wheel.  It is after all a group of people discussing childrens
toys.

Well, the fact that they existed wasn't the point that actually annoyed me-- it
was more directed at the 'contest' idea... What it seemed to me like you were
doing is cross-posting these to lugnet.adventures for the sole purpose of
building up the number of posts to that group. The reason I picked on these two
particular posts is that I think these came the closest to actually violating
the rules.. I'm not really sure they DID (that's for Todd to decide), but
suffice to say, I think they were bending them at least-- the rules are fuzzy
in places.

Anyway, the annoyance was with the 'contest' idea. I remember you had posted
another one a long while back as well, in the same tone... And that's what's
made me object even more to things like the "greatest adventurer movies"
posts... it seemed like you were trying desparately to build up posts so you
could "beat" the other newsgroups, and to that end, were trying to get people
talking, not caring about WHAT, but simply to get them posting to make
lugnet.adventures all the bigger.

At any rate, if it's all in jest and good fun, that's no problem. I just didn't
want to see people posting on barely relavant threads for the purposes of
'winning'. If that happened, I think I'd be very truly annoyed.

And as to the actual apropriateness of the movies thing, it's not so much a
problem with the placement of the original message, but with where the
conversation went-- it seemed to get out of hand. It started out being
something that I think DID belong in adventurers, but it quickly grew into the
specifics of the movies-- and that's where it lost its bearing on the
adventurers group. And again, if it were just a message here and there, it
wouldn't be a problem (at least not for me). It just grew to the point of me
ignoring the adventurers newsgroup entirely, which I'd rather not do.  Hence, I
just would have liked to see it moved to off-topic.fun when it started to
become too much. What's "too much"? Well, that's for us all to decide-- again,
I think the rules are fuzzy on that.

As for the inspiration part, go nuts! I think I was just trying to suggest
topics that don't degenerate as quickly into off-topic areas. The movies idea I
think was highly prone to go off-topic, whereas lego projects and building
ideas are less likely to stray. But as I said, it's not that the movies idea
started out in the wrong place, it was just something that I think from the
beginning was something that was likely to degrade faster... Hence, my advice
would be to watch topics like that closely, and try to come up with some more
directly Lego-related posts that won't tangent as easily...

Anyway, I never intended to fuel up a flame war-- they only tend to make
enemies, and that's certainly not my goal. I just hope we can all play well and
work it so as many of us as possible are happy.

Thanks,
DaveE
