Is this feature something not implemented on the server side?

From what you showed in your conversation-log, it looks like that is
correct.

Is it even standard nntp?

I don't think it is, but I'm not sure.  At the very least, it's either a
standard NNTP extension or a non-standard NNTP extension.  Probably once was
a non-standard NNTP extension and is now vying to become a standard
extension.

JSPROAT: XPAT SUBJECT 1- *[Uu][Ff][Oo]*

The 'X' there in the command denotes an extension.

LUGNET:  500 Command unrecognized.

And this denotes that the NNTP server doesn't recognize the extension (it's
unimplemented).

I'm fairly clueless about nntp on this level.  At a guess, the Netscape nntp
client hit two snags.  The first is then it tried the command "LIST
EXTENSIONS",

Yeah, interesting...  It did the "LIST EXTENSIONS" thing to see if "XPAT"
was supported, but it tried it anyway!  :-o

and the second is that funky "XPAT SUBJECT 1- *[Uu][Ff][Oo]*".

Looks like it's trying to do a case-insensitive regex scan of all the
subject lines in the group for the string "UFO".

Any ideas?

Unfortunately, no.

OTOH, I could easily make a tarball for you of all the raw articles, stored
as separate files in a big directory hierarchy.  Then you could scan that
with grep.

(...) This might work for a one-shot thing, but in general it'd probably be easier to use the Web interface search page. I found what I was looking for there (Steve's UFO hull mock-up.) It'd probably be incredibly huge, anyway, neh? Cheers, - (...) (25 years ago, 4-Jun-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

Howto message search with nntp client

Todd, I am using Netscape Communicator 4.5 as my nntp client. One feature I haven't been able to figure out how to use is the newsgroup message search. After the "Cylon Eye" progress indicator runs for about half a minute, I get back the error (...) (25 years ago, 4-Jun-99, to lugnet.admin.general)
