Okay, it appears I misunderstood you to that extent. Sorry about that.

Then again, the issue is still, that mailing lists as a standard use the
original From: address (which is you) but change the Reply-To field to the
mailing list itself. I repeat, this is a matter of standard, so even if it
appears entirely sensible that you would like to see this handled differently,
it would completely modify this standard behavior.

Still, you are perfectly right when stating you will report the servers bouncing
messages to you: This should not happen to mailing lists, and especially, if a
bounce does happen at all, it should go to the Reply-To, which _is_ the mailing
list (good part: Our mailing lists only accept authorized posts, so the bouncing
server will receive an authentication request which it can and will never answer
;-) )

I strongly disagree here, I should *not* be receiving posts forwarded to
other subscribers.  I can't DO ANYTHING with them, except report them as
misdirected bounces, which they certainly are!  And I certainly don't need
copies of my own posts!

I agree with you, you shouldn't receive copies that you didn't ask for in the
first place (this assumes you have "send me a copy" unchecked in your profile,
which is the default anyway). The behavior of the "bouncers" does appear
incorrect here. Since they are not relaying via the LUGNET server, we cannot do
much about them, however.

In general, I personally see an issue with people subscribing to lists and then
having either overfull mailboxes or going on vacation for a long time and
sending autoresponder messages to the lists  or even the posters.

As a rule of thumb - and I'm hoping many people read this - subscriptions should
be _cancelled_ before and reactivated after a vacation. This is fairly easy with
the interface LUGNET offers. Overfull mailboxes should never happen with
addresses receiving mailing list posts. If I find repeated bounces to LUGNET
reporting full mailboxes (or worse, failed addresses!) I will remove those
addresses from the subscriber lists. This is of course also a means of
preventing the issues you are experiencing.

I hope that helps.

Regards,

Jerry
