I'm slightly an expert, and generally, things like this don't go off right
on their expiration date -- it's to the registrar's benefit to hold on to
it a little while because it's better for you to renew with them than for
the domain to go back into the pool and get grabbed by someone via another
registrar.
This theory is supported by the way the site, as far as I can tell,
dropped off the net at midnight EST exactly one week after the 18th.
Not getting in the argument, just providing some data.
