(...) auth is useless, and has been for the last 10 years or so. I know of no computer that replys to auth truthfully, and even if it does, it proves nothing. I'd disable it if it was easy, but it seems it might take a recompile of the nntpd server, (...) (24 years ago, 18-Apr-02, to lugnet.admin.general)

I do think it's more likely that some network is automatically responding to all auth requests than some network sending auth requests where there were (...) I get the initial connect immediately (within a second or so), and then 3 or 4 seconds to get the newsgroups summary (during which I can see my cable modem blinking away - it would be just inactive during the old initial (...)
