Merlin Announces plans for first LEGOLAND in Japan
June 30, 2014
LEGOLAND is about to become huge in Japan.
Merlin Entertainments, corporate owner of the LEGOLAND parks, announced it will
open its first LEGOLAND in Japan, the worlds second-biggest market for theme
parks. The new property will be built in the city of Nagoya. It will cost about
185 million pounds ($316 million), according to a Merlin news release. Japan
will become the sixth country with a LEGOLAND park.
Here are more details from the news release:
The park will be opened under Merlins operated and leased model, with the
infrastructure of the park being funded by a third party. Merlin will directly
invest about 53 million pounds in the park over the next 3 years and lease the
balance of the assets from a company owned by KIRKBI Invest A/S (a subsidiary of
KIRKBI A/S (KIRKBI) a privately held investment and holding company with a 75%
ownership share in the LEGO Group and a 29.9% shareholding in Merlin).
KIRKBIs investment, which is separate to that of Merlins, will be funded
through a combination of equity and external debt provided by Sumitomo Mitsui
Banking Corporation (SMBC). Merlins investment is expected to deliver returns
consistent with the Groups stated pre-tax cash ROIC target of 20%.
Todays announcement is another major milestone in the development of the
LEGOLAND brand, Nick Varney, Merlin Entertainments Chief Executive Officer,
said. We are delighted to be working closely with the City of Nagoya and with
KIRKBI on the project, both of whom appreciate the potential of the brand in the
second biggest theme park market in the world.
The park will make a significant contribution to the growth of the Merlin group
from opening in the second quarter of 2017, as well as supporting our continued
geographic diversification. Long term, we continue to believe that there is
significant opportunity for the Legoland brand, with the potential for up to 20
parks across the world and we remain committed to our target of opening a new
park every two to three years.
Nagoya is ideally located in the center of Japan and is approximately two hours
from Tokyo and one hour from Osaka, with independent market research suggesting
a potential catchment area in excess of 20 million people. The park will be
located on a site close to the port, with excellent road and rail links. The
initial development will focus on the theme park, with potential options
available for further park expansion and the development of on-site, themed
accommodation over future periods.
LEGOLAND Japan will be of similar scale to the recently opened LEGOLAND parks in
Malaysia and Florida and is expected to employ up to 1,000 staff in a variety of
roles.

Happy Canada Day everyone!
To make it Lego related: my friend and co-builder John will be doing our
annual sit-by-our-Legoslature-model this afternoon here in Edmonton. In
the evening, folks are coming over to my place to watch the annual
fireworks show from my balcony. This year we also get the grand
introduction of the fancy new lights on the High Level Bridge.
Hmm. Does that mean we have to add such lights (about 50,000 of them,
according to the news) to our model of the bridge? Please say no!!

BrickFair VA will be holding four separate contests for LEGO MINDSTORMS
enthusiasts this year. The long-running favorites Stock Sumo and Unlimited Sumo
will be held as usual, and the Capture the Flag contest is returning from last
year. There will also be a new contest for this year: the Pole Vault.
Pole Vault is a event that tests your robot's gymnastic ability. Contestants
must travel to a one foot high wall in the center of the table, jump or climb
over it, and reach the other side safely. This contest is recommended for KFOLs
and TFOLs, although FOLs of all ages are welcome to compete.
In Capture the Flag, two robots will face off from opposite sides of the table,
and the winner will be the first robot that can locate the flag, grab it, and
find its way back to home base. The flag is represented by an infrared
HiTechnic ball, and as an added complication, it starts out on a flag carrier
robot that is wandering randomly around the arena. This contest is recommended
for AFOLs, although FOLs of all ages are welcome to compete.
The official contest rules can be found at the following links:
Pole Vault: http://www.brickfair.com/game/pop/PoleVault.pdf
Capture the Flag: http://www.brickfair.com/game/pop/Capture.pdf
Stock & Unlimited Sumo: http://www.brickfair.com/game/pop/SumoRules.pdf
BrickFair VA will be coming to the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly, VA from July
30 to August 3, 2014. Public hours are on August 2nd and 3rd from 11:00 AM to
4:00 PM.

LEGO to Boost Capacity at Mexican Factory
Danish Toy Maker to Increase Head Count by 50% in Move to Serve North and South
American Markets
By Clemens Bomsdorf
COPENHAGENLego A/S, the worlds No. 2 toy maker by revenue, is planning a 50%
increase in head count at its factory in Mexico to meet demand for its popular
interlocking brick toys in North and South America.
The Danish company, which has enjoyed significant momentum in recent years, saw
its sales growth moderate in 2013 amid challenging conditions for traditional
toy makers around the world. Chief Executive Jørgen Vig Knudstorp has been
shifting focus toward emerging markets, such as China, where it has not yet
scored the sales success notched in places like the U.S.
The investment in Mexico, however, signals continued optimism about Legos
prospects in the lucrative U.S. market. An additional 1,000 people will be hired
to work in a factory that employs 2,000 and it will significantly boost
production capacity for the Americas markets, the company said.
LEGO spokesman Roar Rude Trangbaek didnt give details on total output or future
expectations. The extra capacity at the plant north of Monterrey will be in
place in September, he said.
When planning expansions we want to secure that factories capacities can meet
demand in the longer run, meaning capacity is not necessarily utilized fully
straight away, he said, adding that the same strategy is in place for other
expansions, such as into China, where a factory is envisioned by 2017.
Mr. Rude said LEGO is moving toward a manufacturing strategy of building toys
close to where they are sold. Our setup is built in a way that the Americas
shall be served from the Mexico factory and production sites in Asia and Europe
serve those markets.
The U.S. is LEGO biggest market, but the company doesnt disclose detailed sales
figures by country. The company, which had revenue of about $4.6 billion last
year, is second only to Mattel Inc. in global toy sales.
Mr. Knudstorp in a recent interview said LEGO quadrupled its business just in
the U.S. market over the past several years, and the companys success has stood
out in an otherwise struggling industry. We have done so by not focusing on the
competition, he said, noting that while the U.S. toy market has declined by 9%,
without LEGO the decline would have been 16%.
LEGO recorded a 9% rise in profit last year on 10% revenue growth. In 2012, its
profit rose 35% while revenue grew 23%.

LEGO® FUSION
NEW YORK, June 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ - LEGO Systems, Inc., makers of the worlds
leading construction toys, today introduced LEGO® FUSION, a play experience that
combines traditional LEGO brick play with familiar app-based game themes. LEGO
FUSION leverages new technologies and childrens fascination with them, to
create an entirely new way to engage in LEGO brick building and app game play
for children ages 7 and up. Available later this summer, the LEGO FUSION
collection will include four distinct titles: LEGO FUSION Town Master, LEGO
FUSION Battle Towers, LEGO FUSION Create & Race and LEGO FUSION Resort Designer.
Each LEGO FUSION experience consists of a distinct set of LEGO bricks, a
corresponding free downloadable app and the new FUSION capture plate, a small
brick building plate with a printed design that enables a smart phone or
tablets camera to identify the size and colors of the LEGO bricks built onto
it. In response to game prompts, children build vertically in 2-D on the FUSION
capture plate, enabling the app to see, import and transform the creation into
3-D in the digital world.
Children have always imagined their LEGO creations as immersive worlds which
come to life for hours of role-play and adventure, said Ditte Bruun Pedersen,
senior design manager, LEGO Future Lab. Recently, smart phones and tablets have
become a popular platform for empowering game mechanisms that kids love. LEGO
FUSION brings these two favorite play patterns together in an experience where
real-life LEGO builds come to life in a virtual game, inspiring creativity,
strategy, and the pride of creation.
To Win, Step Away from the Screen
Once a childs creation has been imported into the game, a series of challenges
and interactions requires that players turn away from the device and return to
the real world to use their LEGO bricks to build new solutions in order to move
game play forward. Each game encourages this back-and-forth between physical and
virtual, keeping children engaged in both worlds.
In our research, we heard repeatedly from parents that they are constantly
battling zombie gaze, the experience when their children are immersed in their
device screens for large blocks of time, said Pedersen. We developed LEGO
FUSION with this challenge in mind, creating a play experience that keeps
children entertained with the kind of app gameplay they love while giving real
reasons to return to the brick pile to creatively build.
Each LEGO FUSION product offers a distinct play experience. The four products
launching this year are:
LEGO FUSION Town Master
In this simulation game, players create and rule their own LEGO town, first by
building it with LEGO bricks, then by capturing it and importing it to the game.
Children build everything from houses to a pizzeria, fire station and bike shop
while completing errands and missions like catching robbers, fighting fires and
skateboarding. To keep the minifigure citizens happy, players solve problems
through physical building and earn points to gain access to more structures, and
even run additional towns.
LEGO FUSION Battle Towers
Players build a tower and defend it against attack so they can rule the kingdom.
First, players design the Battle Towers with real LEGO pieces, then capture them
and import them to the game. Next, players choose tower defenders like wizards
and archers and battle against evil warriors, skeleton armies, and more. If a
tower is damaged in battle, players can repair the damage with a timed build
with the games real LEGO bricks.
LEGO FUSION Create & Race
In this racing game, players get behind the wheel and virtually drive the cars
that they create with real LEGO bricks. Once a custom vehicle is digitally
designed, physically built, and imported to the game, it can be optimized for
success in racing, demolition or stunts. Players learn that every brick shape
and color on the vehicle matters for performance. Three themed courses offer
endless challenges unlocked by physical LEGO builds, and children can even ghost
race against friends to top the leaderboard.
LEGO FUSION Resort Designer
Players help the LEGO Friends design new vacation houses, shops and activities
for Ambersands Beach. After building 2-D facades, capturing them and importing
them to the game, players can design the interiors of 3-D digital structures,
such as an aquarium, surf shop and beach houses. Children can unlock new levels
and build more resorts by completing missions like rescuing dolphins, riding
horses, surfing and other resort activities.
Beginning in September, LEGO FUSION will incorporate the ability for players to
access their digital LEGO creations and game play anywhere. Using their LEGO ID,
players can sign in on any compatible device and access their gallery and game
play from within the LEGO FUSION app.
Developed by TT Games, makers of the best-selling LEGO video game franchise, the
LEGO FUSION Town Master, Battle Towers, Create & Race, and Resort Designer app
games are free for download from the Apple, Google or Samsung App Store for
Apple iOS and Android.
LEGO FUSION Town Master, LEGO FUSION Battle Towers, and LEGO FUSION Create &
Race will launch in August 2014; LEGO FUSION Resort Designer will launch in
September 2014. Each will be available for $34.99 in LEGO Stores and ToysRUs
stores in the U.S., as well as online at shop.LEGO.com and at toysrus.com.

I've been working on expanding the Castle/Ninja/Pirate chapters of the
Unofficial LEGO Sets/Parts Collectors guide (free to current owners), and also
working on the 9V Train System. In doing so I realized that some systems cannot
logically be cut off at the year 2000, so these chapters will go well beyond
that date.
Ditto for the Promotional Sets chapter. There are so many interesting stories
to tell about more recent promotional sets, such as the 2006 10152 Maersk Line
Set that has the very rare 2x4 Maersk blue bricks from the 1980s (no cross
supports).
There are so many additional interesting story to tell about so many LEGO sets
and promotions, that I'm adding a chapter about LEGO Anecdotes... stories about
rare and unique LEGO sets... some stories will run to 10 pages with 20 photos!
Anyway... I've got so many new and old stories to tell in the old as well as
new LEGO desktop download.... with all future updates coming to you for free.

I too noticed that Dave did some sort of trickery double post. Very strange.
When I go to Brickfete, and I see him all dressed up in his adorable lego smock,

So there I was minding my own business when I gaze upon the Brickfete paid
attendee's list and I see something rather interesting.
Oh sure, there is Kevin Hinkle, (He thinks he's important at Lego)
The cool and ever charming Priscilla Sam (LEGO Assistant Manager, Events and
Trade Marketing, Canada) and then I saw this:
Jamie Berard (Design Manager Specialist at LEGO Group, Denmark)
YEP, driving all the way from Denmark to Toronto, Canada to visit our fest is
thee Jamie Berard.
I waited for confirmation from Kevin, and he begrudgingly said that YES, Jamie
would be in attendance. Then I asked Kevin if he had warned Jamie and me, and
Keven never replied.
I am also waiting on confirmation but I think Jamie will also be handing out
some new set he designed. Some theme park ride thing (1). Meh. NO technic so
I'm not that interested.
Please check the schedule for time and location.

1. In No way, shape, or form, will Jamie be handing out said Lego. I just said
that to see if John Neal would reply.

The Dowager LEGO Lady herself, Edith Kirk Christiansen turns 90 years old today,
May 29, 2014.
Edith was born on May 29, 1924, is the daughter-in-law of LEGO founder Ole Kirk
Christiansen, widow of LEGO chief Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, and mother of
Gunhild Kirk Johansen, Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, and (the late) Hanne Kirk
Christiansen.
Billund is probably all abuzz today with celebrations for the Queen of LEGO
herself!
Here she is in 2012 with her daughter Gunhild and son-in-law Mogans...

September 2013 royal visit to Billund of Denmark's Queen Margrethe II...

May she live to be 100 !! :-)

I thought this would be interesting for people who buy and sell on
BrickLink.com. This is a copy or a repost from Northstar Computer Systems. It
was first posted on Northcomp.com website and then copied to Bricklink.com forum
by a BL member on May 14, 2014.

Leaving BrickLink.com
In case you dont know me, my name is Eric Smith. I was originally involved with
BrickLink as the web host, starting back in 2001. I assisted Dan with 3 or 4
server upgrades as the site traffic grew and helped out occasionally with
technical questions he had. It was exciting to see this site grow over those
years, watching the number of users and parts climb each month. I continued
hosting the site for Dan Jezek until he passed away in September 2010. I was
asked to serve as BrickLink Administrator by Dans family, in addition to
hosting the site. The site saw an explosion of growth between 2010 and 2013,
which was rewarding to see.
After the site was sold in June 2013, both the family and the new owners asked
me to continue in my role as site administrator to aid in the transition between
owners. I wasnt sure how things would go, but I was invited to meet the new
owners in Seoul in July 2013. At our meetings, they convinced me that they would
be good stewards of the community that Dan built. Building a replacement site
seemed like it was the immediate priority, and I was looking forward to
providing guidance and serving as a user representative during this process.
When the chief communications officer role was created in November 2013, the
original charter was to serve as the liaison between BrickLink and AFOL groups,
conventions, etc. While I continued to do my job as site administrator, this
person managed to convince the site owners to put all customer service under the
chief communications officer role, effectively demoting me from a role Id been
performing for more than three years.
This change occurred in December 2013. I asked ownership several times for a
reason for my demotion and was never given an explanation. This demotion and new
organizational structure was announced back in December with a little blurb
announcing the new customer service team. Since December, I have been relegated
to supporting her team, which has grown to five people including her. These five
people are now doing the same job I did, part-time by myself, for more than 3
years.
My contract is up at the beginning of June and it has no automatic renewal
clause. At the end of April, I contacted the leadership of the company to
determine my status. My assumption was that the answer was that I was being let
go in favor of her local team. Instead, the chief communication officer offered
me only 10% of my current contract fee to help her team do my old job. It would
have been far less insulting to simply not renew the contract. Sadly, as a
result of this response, I will no longer be involved in BrickLink as of June
5th, 2014.
If you have questions, please send them to me privately at eric ( at ) northcomp
( dot ) com. Thanks to those of you who have provided encouragement and support
during my time in this position. Id like to hope Dan would be happy with how I
managed the community he created.
Eric
