I find that the ideal solution to this situation is to build a power system for the robot. Maxim, Linear Technology, and National each make very easy to use switching regulators that can provide highly efficient DC to DC conversion. Building a (...) (...) Southern California stores are pretty darn slow about putting out the sale prices (or not at all). It drives me nuts. Some of the expansion board kits (all? sorry, haven't been paying much attention to the extension boards yet) mention that they have slots for LEGO style sensors.
