It isn't hanging, it's a blocking read until it recieves some specified number of characters. You can use a non blocking read by specifying O_NONBLOCK, in which case read() will return immediately. I don't have mindstorms (or that large a collection of Technic stuff, hopefully Christmas! ;) ), but I've been looking around, and finding creations that use both a mindstorms and a battery box.
