In my problem description I didn't mention that I had actually included the part in an mlcad model, so effectively it was created as a Type 1 line. The solution to the problem though seems to have been removing the part from the ldraw models (...) (22 years ago, 2-Jan-03, to lugnet.cad.dat.parts)

I think adding the good Dr Carney as #50 would be a nice way to round off the roll call. I don't think anyone would argue he's an enormous part of the castle community (even the spacers would admit that). Any objections? (...) (22 years ago, 2-Jan-03, to lugnet.castle)

I appear to have answered my own question, though I don't understand the answer :) It seems that if the part is located in the LDRAW\MODELS directory, the extended face problem exists. If the part is moved into LDRAW\PARTS, however, the problem (...) (22 years ago, 2-Jan-03, to lugnet.cad.dat.parts)
