PNLTC (Now GPLR and PSLTC) did a few museum shows at the Oregon Museum of
Science and Industry (OMSI) (where I happen to work full time). One of our
shows was just for one weekend, and other show ran for 10 days, including two
weekends. PNLTC members staffed the display during the weekends, museum
volunteers and staff worked the display during the week.
Here are my thoughts:
LEGO invites play. You can expect the museum staff and volunteers to play (ie
rebuild your display) while you are not there. I wouldn't put anything out that
you can't put back together again. You may want to consider putting up
plexiglass walls all the way around the display. I think the Florida club
displays did things like that for a while.
Definity consider hooking up the train controllers to either a pushbutton start
off delay timer or a motion sensor of some sort to save wear and tear on the
motors and track.
If you are going to run more then one week, cleaning will become an issue, you
should be prepared to dust/clean your display every two weeks or so unless the
display is entirely closed (museum with lots of people are very dirty places).
This will depend on air handlers, location and the number of people who visit
(people are one the primary sources of dust, dirt and grime)
Ask the museum for a significant stipend to cover your expenses and then some.
I've found people tend to respect things more when they have to pay for them.
The museum should provide stanchions. If the museum has a lot of children, the
stanchions should have several levels of strapping to keep kids from walking
underneath the top rope.
