cool write up. the pictures cleared up a lot of questions for me. it's good to
know that the company used they're heads somewhat in the design, allthough this
new ir train seems more like a fad product verses a system meant to last awhile.
a few questions
.do you know when i'm going to be able to get my hands on one of these sets? i
need one as quickly as possible so i can engineer a few add ons.
.how long before the the train times out?
.you mentioned the redesigned train wheels, how are they compared to the old
design and is there anything note worthy about the new design?

Sorry, I am not totally sure there. See my pics from ToyFair on BrickLink, the
placards say the release dates but I forget what they are.

Two advantages as I mentioned in the review...
1. The power unit can power anything that you can put on a technic axle. Not
just trains. I could see making some sort of tyred vehicle if one was clever
(although the receiver and battery being all in one piece, in the baseplate
makes that hard)
2. The unpowered axle holder unit now uses a wheel/axle combo that is seperable.
It's no longer even a tiny hack to take the wheels out, that's the way they
come, disassembled. The axles now just loosely press fit into the wheels. I
think the friction may be lower, and also it enables people (J2 et al) to do
other things to make trucks.
I thought I touched on these in some depth but maybe not.

I think Ondrew was talking about the "time-out" mentioned somewhere, that the IR
electronics switches off after a certain time if there's no signal from the
controller. I'd be interested in knowing that too.
Also, if you get a chance, could you check the dimensions of the electronics
"box" that sticks up on top of the base? It looks about 4x10 studs and 3 1/3
bricks high, but I'd be interested in checking that, especially the height.

I think this is my biggest problem with the line. I am sure it is fun for kids
but it is the "in thing" in play trains right now. There seem to be 100
different IR/Remote control trains for kids out there (And most are
significantly cheaper than the LEGO Train). I just fear they are entering a
crowded market.
I also don't like the trend of copying other companies products. Other
companies are supposed to copy LEGO. LEGO now has a Fisher Price Air Plane and
Fisher Price Train.

I think they are supposed to be released in August but it seems that LEGO is
beating their target ship dates these days.
