I am loathe to even reply to this post as I am almost sure that Allister is deliberately trying to stir up controversy. I will be the first to say that it is in poor taste though. Way to go for exercising your right to free speech.

In what way is this poor taste exactly? Ribald humour is quite an old form of
humour (Chaucer springs to mind) and any child viewing it who did not know what
it referred to wouldn't get it anyway (if you mean we should 'think of the
children'). Perhaps you prefer the sort of free speech that agrees with your
world view.

Still wondering what contest Rosco was referring to when I called Richie on his previous trolling, starting to suspect a pattern, and wondering as to why the frequency of these trolls and mocks seems to be increasing, I decided to go look around for myself. I held my nose and did a little digging around on JLUG. (it took about 5 clicks so it wasn’t too bad).

It seems there was a contest after all. It looks like you are saying that Allister (as the author of this post ) is trying to deliberately stir up controversy on LUGNET. That is, the same guy that subsequently authored this singularly unhelpful post (mocking the very existence of the contest that he created) is perhaps actually not acting here on LUGNET with the best of motives?

If that’s what you’re saying I would have to agree that it certainly does have that appearance, doesn’t it?

One has to wonder if that mysterious contest is still actually (secretly??) running or not (whether these “entries” are valid under the rules or not seems irrelevant)... or if not, why there seems to be such an upswing in mocking, pastiches, controversial posts cloaked in claimed “humor”, and so forth.

Why is this a good thing for the community, or for LUGNET specifically? Perhaps it isn’t. Perhaps the people engaging in this trolling and mocking don’t actually have the best interests of LUGNET at heart, although it’s hard to tell for sure since many of them apparently (based on their statements in things like their LUGNET member pages) pride themselves on ambiguity.

I don’t get it... maybe Allister and Richie haven’t been trolling, it’s hard to say for sure, but in general the best thing to do with trolls, once it’s clear what is going on, is ignore them.

I expect this post of mine will be mock fodder too...

Whatever. Mock away.

These trolls and mocks? Exactly which trolls and mocks are you referring to here?

ROSCO

And to think you were once one of the bastions of JLUG. Come back Larry. We miss you.

It seems there was a contest after all.

Well knock me down with a feather!

It looks like you are saying that Allister (as the author of this post ) is trying to deliberately stir up controversy on LUGNET.

That ‘contest’ never got off the ground. And this certainly isn’t an entry. Trust me, if I was entering that contest, you’d know.

That is, the same guy that subsequently authored this singularly unhelpful post (mocking the very existence of the contest that he created) is perhaps actually not acting here on LUGNET with the best of motives?

Nothing there but a sense of impish fun, Larry. And if you can’t mock yourself you might as well end it all now.

Secretly? It’s there for anyone with a computer and an internet connection to see. Don’t be too impressed with your own detective skills there, Dick Tracy.

or if not, why there seems to be such an upswing in mocking, pastiches, controversial posts cloaked in claimed “humor”, and so forth.

It strangely coincides with an upswing in humourlessness. I for one find people that take any particular subject too serioulsy to be particularly ripe for satire. Maybe others do as well.

Clearly you think LUGNET is more important than I do. Building Lego models is just a bit of fun for me, Larry. It’s not like I’m making money off it.

What exactly are LUGNET’s interests anyway? Is it in LUGNET’s interest to post Lego models that I, as a paid member of LUGNET, think worthy of display? Alright, it’s a bit of a juvenile joke, but it’s still something I put a considerable amount of creative capital into. I really don’t appreciate being cast as a troll because of it. Unless you consider that to be in LUGNET’s interest, in which case I have no response other than :flabbergasted:

I can’t imagine what possesed you to seek out Richie’s LUGNET profile as a result of reading this thread, but I fail to see the relevance. If you have issues with Richie, take it up with him, but leave it out of this thread.

Yet you responed. Is not following your own advice in LUGNET’s interest too?

I expect this post of mine will be mock fodder too...

Probably, but not by me.

That said, what did you think of the model, constructionwise? As someone who clearly excells at space I value your opinion.

Cheers,

Allister
