Hi, folks,

Long time, no see. I’ve been lurking here for years. Fatherhood and work keep me busy. All the great MOCs have been inspiring.

Mark Sandlin’s Civilian MOC Contest finally drew me out. Here’s my entry -- the Sunfish land-speeder, or hover-car, whatever you want to call it.

If you want to imagine the Sunfish as part of the Star Wars universe, you are welcome to do so. I always thought that it was a little silly that Luke and Obi-Wan had a noisy jet engine directly behind their heads. That, and the desire to de-SPUD some of my kid’s Bionicle parts, inspired this MOC.

I’ve had the Sunfish built since early 2002, but no one outside of our home has seen it until I put up the pictures on Brickshelf, about a week ago. I think that means that it qualifies as a new model, per the GA’s requirements?

If anyone wants to email me, please note that, even after you edit out Lugnet’s spam trap, the word “spam” will still exist in my VALID email address. Thanks!

Cheers, John Ladasky

That’s some beautiful integration of Bionicle there- reminds me of Jon Palmer’s (M?)-Wing. The concept and execution are spot on. And it even looks like you have folding landing gear. Very nice work.

Hi, Tony,

Thanks for the compliments!

Actually, it reminds me of Travis Kunce’s Blizzard. I felt pretty chagrined when Travis unveiled his model. Yours Truly was still debating which digital camera to buy to photograph his own MOCs. As I said, work and family keep me busy!

I’ve debated whether to actually use those greebles as landing gear. They have to be a plate taller to touch the ground. I disliked the way that they looked with anything other than the simple 1 x 1 round brick.

A great example how you can use Bionicles parts for a good MOC. Excellent work:)

Gosh, Paul, do you like it that much?  Thanks!

Perhaps if some other people expressed some interest, I might consider doing a
run of kits.  But I was actually planning to do an exploded view and give the
design away on Brickshelf.  It doesn't have that much non-standard construction,
though it was enough to frustrate my attempt to render it in MLCAD.

I can think of some improvements I'd like to make.  I'd like to add an
instrument panel in the cockpit.  It seems a bit plain with only the joystick.
Space is really tight, though.  Also, when a model is this small, I like to
render it in multiple color schemes.  The ball joints, the Bionicle feet, and
the 1x3 inverted slope bricks are only available in a limited range of colors.
I can do one with a black body and a tan racing stripe.

Cheers,
John Ladasky
