I keep hearing about him, did he invent this pirate game or something?

You obviously have never played any Role Playing Games (RPG's). Steve
Jackson is the owner of Steve Jackson Games (tm). He's also a Lego
collector. I'm hoping for him to show up at Brickfest too. Check out
www.sjgames.com.

In a more direct answer to your question, yes, he is responsible for Evil
Stevie's Pirate game that we all like to play. Check out the website for it at
http://www.io.com/~sj/PirateGame.html
Or just his main web site to find more about him at:
http://www.io.com/~sj/
He's not only a great game maker, he's a really neat guy and responsible for at
least one late-blooming AFOL, me. Oh, and if you're reading this Steve, my
wife still has some choice words for getting me into this new hobby just when
my spending for the RPG collection had plateaued. :) (The funniest part is
that he could just be reading this)
Sean, The Sharply Dressed yet Completely Mad Pirate
PS: I was recently shown an old issue of Shadis that laid out Lego Pirate rules
very similar to the Pirate game. Does anyone know of any connection?

Ah, Pirate Wars by Stephen Gabriel (what is it with all these Steves -
it must be an Illuminati conspiracy or something...). I am certainly
curious as to any connection, but Pirate Wars seems to be aimed more at
being a pure wargame, where Evil Stevie's Pirate Game is oriented more
towards role playing and fun.

Hold on a second here, I know I've encountered
that question before...
...Nope, wrong "Steve Jackson", he's the *other* Steve Jackson.
Hope this helps.

And, dare I say it, the Superior Product [tm] if not the
*wealthier* one. (Is anyone involved in real gaming wealthy,
save perhaps Gygax and Co of Terminally Silly Rules Corp and
the flat-crack (various froth-inducing card games) people?)
Then again, when gaming, who needs anything besides pizza,
beer, and No-Doz? I remember a few Ogre/Shockwave/G.E.V.
marathons very well...one eventually degenerated into a game
of "Turtles, Turtles, and more Turtles" a la TSG, as there
were plenty of large empty boxes about.

Computer game designers that own a piece of the company or otherwise get
points (the last distinction being important - as I can personally witness
to, unfortunately). But I suppose that you're not refering to computer
gaming. Reiner Knizia is probably doing very well for a non-computer game
designer.

Steve Jackson's GURPS. Great system (but a little too complex for my almost
10 year old).

True, but the Campaign aspect has really been developed only after the
mechanics were worked out. Hence, on the pages it's Pirate game: the first
part, Combat, the second part Campaign. (more important, and harder to develop
I guess)
But you're probably right about the Illuminati being involved (Steve #534 and
Steve #2003 are probably watching me type this right now) so we'd better be
quiet.

Incidentally, Stphen Gabriel's Pirate Wars rules (and more) are online,
check out the links from my Pirate Gaming page:
