Did you post this message just to defend Lenny, or because you wanted to take a
shot at Chris?
(And before you ask: Yes, I am posting this because I want to take a shot at
you.)

If you dont like the contest sponsors ruling, then
do something helpful, like John Neal did.
|
Why? It seems Johns already posting the mandated head.
|
Or maybe sponsor your own contest - one without rules, perhaps?
|
Good idea. I wonder what this mysterious contest could be about...
|
Why all the outrage over the fact that a contest has rules and that those
rules were enforced?
|
If you dont understand why, maybe you need to think more deeply about it.
|
The response is especially inexplicable given that the
situation seemed to have been resolved quite nicely before it was taken up as
a cause celebre.
|
Thats what I thought too... until you started demanding that Chris imitate
John.

To defend Lenny (whose reply I found amusing) and also Nelson, whos being
painted as some sort of bad guy for enforcing the rules of his contest. Why
would you want to take a shot at me?

Thats why I said like. It was an example.

I guess it can be about anything. To make and enforce rules would be
mean-spirited, apparently.

I dont think its really that complicated. The
rules are clear and were
fairly enforced; Linus gracefully accepted the ruling; John is helping him
comply with the rules. Whats the problem?

My sentiments as well. Im glad the rules are enforced, which ensures that this
contest is more enjoyable in the end. There really is no need for a greater
debate than that.

While there is no need for debate for this particular example I dont think it
is entirely unneccesary. The debate goes beyond the current example into the
wider realm of contests, rules, strict interpretations, internet manners etc.
Just because this particular example is resolved for the parties concerned
doesnt mean there isnt legitimate grounds for a general debate.

PS. As it stands I agree with Nelson that rules of competitions should be
enforced, if only because some people may make great efforts to follow them and
making them more flexible diminishes those peoples efforts.
