Hallo,
ich habe Mitte letzten Jahres die Liebe zu LEGO wiederentdeckt und bin
gerade dabei, meine Sammlung zu durchforsten und sortieren. Gibt's hier noch
wen, "der mich versteht"? ;)

I'll be taking a week or two in June/July for 1000steine-Land 2004 in
Berlin, and I'm wondering what is the best (most economical) way to do
this. I live in Boston and would like to leave Boston approximately
June 25 in the evening and return to Boston approximately July 12 in
the morning.
Friends here say I might find much better airfaires if I fly, say, KLM
to Amsterdam and take the train to Berlin and back or ride with someone
who is driving to the fest from Amsterdam, Frankfurt, or some other
relatively nearby city.
I'll be at 1000steine-Land as a photographer, working on a large coffee-
table art/book project I began over a year ago which is designed to expose
the general public to the amazing things adult LEGO enthusiasts build and
do. Ideally, I'd like to meet with German LEGO fans before and after the
event, and if possible kind of float around nearby cities visiting people
in any or all of the Netherlands, Italy, France, Austria, Switzerland, etc.
I'll also be visiting the Netherlands later in the year for LEGO World and
hope to make it to Denmark to visit Byggepladen perhaps in the same trip.
Is anyone here from the Netherlands driving to Berlin, and would you
consider taking a passenger? Are there other economical alternatives
besides Amsterdam? Is the train expensive from Amsterdam to Germany?
Do I have to get a separate visa for each country I visit, or can I get
a two-week EU visa? Where would be a good place for me to research all
of this online?
Thanks,
--Todd

Hello everybody!
This fall I went with my family to Vienna and we went by the amazing
Hundertwasser Haus. I imediately realized that the building would make a great
subject for a LEGO model and over christmas I found the time to carry out the
project. Here's the result:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=68696
Created by the austrian painter and architecht Friedensreich Hundertwasser, the
Hundertwasser Haus opened in 1986 as a regular appartement building owned by the
City of Vienna. I read somewhere that it is now the largest tourist attraction
in Vienna apart from the Schonbruun Palace! More info can be found at
http://www.hundertwasserhaus.at.
I wanted to model the building as accurate as possible in minifig-scale using my
existing collection of bricks. That imposed two restrictions: I only had bricks
to make the outer walls of the building. Also I didn't have any photo material
of the back, so I wouldn't know what to build. I've included some pics of the
backside of the model revealing how the SNOT was made in a very simple way
(http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=625317). When looking from the
right angle, you can't really see that the building is nothing but a set piece
(http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=625285).
Secondly, and most importantly, I had got neither the right type of windows
(they don't exist in LEGO?) nor the right amount, so instead I chose to use all
sorts of windows in many colors
(http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=625299). The result is actually
quite nice, I think.
The many colors of the house made it possible for me to use many of the new LEGO
colors, including tan, tan red, orange and dark grey. In the mosaic along the
wall at the ground floor I've used my very few plates in colors such as light
blue, dark red, pink and brown
(http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=625308).
I made no plan of the model before building, I just started in the lower left
corner and finished in the upper right :-). My own favourite details are the
props I build last, the cafe and the fountain
(http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=625295). I'm also quite happy
with all the columns and the rounded stairs to the cafe.
The building is huge and very unstable and fragile (!) and it will probably
never make it out of the basement "alive". I know, I ought to build some support
for the walls. I've included some pictures of me next to the house so you could
get a feeling of the size
(http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=625313).
Finally, there are plenty of reference photos for you to compare with. If you
look closely you will se my brothers and I on some of them
(http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=68697)
That was a long description! Please write any comment you have, I'd really like
to hear!
Have fun,
Esben
