Hello everybody!

This fall I went with my family to Vienna and we went by the amazing
Hundertwasser Haus. I imediately realized that the building would make a great
subject for a LEGO model and over christmas I found the time to carry out the
project. Here's the result:

http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=68696

Created by the austrian painter and architecht Friedensreich Hundertwasser, the
Hundertwasser Haus opened in 1986 as a regular appartement building owned by the
City of Vienna. I read somewhere that it is now the largest tourist attraction
in Vienna apart from the Schonbruun Palace! More info can be found at
http://www.hundertwasserhaus.at.

I wanted to model the building as accurate as possible in minifig-scale using my
existing collection of bricks. That imposed two restrictions: I only had bricks
to make the outer walls of the building. Also I didn't have any photo material
of the back, so I wouldn't know what to build. I've included some pics of the
backside of the model revealing how the SNOT was made in a very simple way
(http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=625317). When looking from the
right angle, you can't really see that the building is nothing but a set piece
(http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=625285).

Secondly, and most importantly, I had got neither the right type of windows
(they don't exist in LEGO?) nor the right amount, so instead I chose to use all
sorts of windows in many colors
(http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=625299). The result is actually
quite nice, I think.

The many colors of the house made it possible for me to use many of the new LEGO
colors, including tan, tan red, orange and dark grey. In the mosaic along the
wall at the ground floor I've used my very few plates in colors such as light
blue, dark red, pink and brown
(http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=625308).

I made no plan of the model before building, I just started in the lower left
corner and finished in the upper right :-). My own favourite details are the
props I build last, the cafe and the fountain
(http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=625295). I'm also quite happy
with all the columns and the rounded stairs to the cafe.

The building is huge and very unstable and fragile (!) and it will probably
never make it out of the basement "alive". I know, I ought to build some support
for the walls. I've included some pictures of me next to the house so you could
get a feeling of the size
(http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=625313).

Finally, there are plenty of reference photos for you to compare with. If you
look closely you will se my brothers and I on some of them
(http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=68697)

That was a long description! Please write any comment you have, I'd really like
to hear!

Have fun,

Esben

(...) it. Quite a lot of details too. You don't happen to have a picture in wall-paper size ~1024x768 ? -- Anders Isaksson, Sweden BlockCAD: (2 URLs) (20 years ago, 1-Jan-04, to lugnet.build)

What a brilliant model, and a good use for primary colours I showed this to my wife who is a big Hundertwasser (but not Lego :( ) fan and she loved it. Spotlighted (lit?) Tim (20 years ago, 11-Jan-04, to lugnet.build)

(...) That house seems like something Dali or Escher might have done! Very wild. I went to the site that you gave for more information and it gave some info on this architect's other work but did not answer the burning question I had... WHY? What (...) (20 years ago, 12-Jan-04, to lugnet.build)

Hello Esben, If your collection really is what I would also call "limited", then this building gives you the opportunity to build a relatively large building witout running out of a specific color of bricks, or a specific sort of windows ;-). But (...) (20 years ago, 12-Jan-04, to lugnet.build)

Hi Esben, thanks for sharing your brilliant work! You really hit the Hundertwasser character with the LEGO bricks! It's obvious to use the multi-coloured LEGO bricks to build a Hunderwasser house, but no one did it before. And you also managed to (...) (20 years ago, 12-Jan-04, to lugnet.build, FTX)

Hi Esben, Your moc is very creative. As others have said, for using limited amounts of bricks you seem to have captured the building nicely. I love architecture moc's. Even though I prefer medieval buildings, I have a small soft spot for unique (...) (20 years ago, 12-Jan-04, to lugnet.build)
