Hi all,
Hello all,
We (the Vancouver Lego Club) just finished doing a show locally this
past weekend, and I thought I'd post a link to some preliminary
pictures of the Harry Potter stuff that I created for the show.
Sorry for the blurry pix, an older digital camera was used. Better
ones are coming soon.
On top of the mountain, you'll see a structure that is not part of the
Hogwarts area. It's the upper station of a wonderful gondola system
that had working cars moving up and down (automatically) all weekend.

the castle, notice the water entrance, where 1st years would first
enter Hogwarts. You can't see it in this picture, but there is a
platform inside the arches with pillars supporting the roof, and doors
leading off to the right and left from the chamber.

- The whomping willow, which was motorized and, using a mindstorms
program, actually "whomped" for a few seconds every time the train
left Hogsmeade station.

Although there are some nice new elements from the new HP line, I'm
quite disappointed overall. My MOCs are more along the lines of what

Have you tried to add pistons to the engine? E.g. the old ones from the
70'ies; the yellow ones.

Very stable. No problem with curves or points. You can't really tell
anything from that picture, but I'll have more and better ones soon.
There are multiple pivet points of articulation for the large wheels,
and I "cheated" by placing tiny train wheels underneath to "guide" the
large ones.

Not from that first batch, but I will have more pix of that car, as
well as the "combo" car, tender and locomotive, very soon.

Did I ever!! I spent many hours experimenting with various cylinder
and piston designs. I tried to find some of the old yellow pistons,
but eventually decided that I didn't want yellow ones anyway, so gave
that up.
I came up with some beautiful custom designs that just looked awesome
... until they broke off, or seized up. Also, due to the articulation
of the train body, curves presented unique challenges, to say the
least. Eventually I opted to leave them all off, in favour of having
an engine that was able to run reliably on our layout for 2 days with
very little attention paid to making sure everything was working
properly.
I did leave lots of space, however, for future attempts! ;-)

The gondola was created by David, our youngest member (16 years old).
Awesome creation! Unfortunately, David is not online, so I can't give
you contact information for him. The gondola had two cars mounted on
a fixed length of string. No tensioners or springs were used. A
light sensor was mounted at the bottom of the tram-way. When the car
crossed it, the motor would stop, wait 5 seconds, then reverse
direction. Eventually the other car would cross the sensor, etc. It
would take about 10 seconds for a car to go from top to bottom.

To tell you the truth, I was skeptical about making a working gondola...
Well David totally proved me wrong!
I've spent some time looking at the system (mainly cuz the system sits on my
mountain), and I've got it with me anyway. So I took 2 close-up pictures of
the gondola's innards:

The first picture (gon1.jpg) is slightly angled, and the second one
(gon2.jpg) is more overhead.
In case it's unclear, the string comes in towards the top of the picture,
around the top yellow pulley, down around the bottom pulley, down and around
the yellow 1x1 round plates, around the tire, and then exits the system.
The string is guided by a few more pulleys and tires (without rubber) on its
way up and down the mountain.
I believe that the gears inside make it more complicated than it really is.
The piece that does most of the work is the tire. David cut a slight groove
into the tire, and that's where the string sits. The amount of friction is
remarkably high! So basically, the technic motor turns the tire, and the
tire pulls the string.
I suppose the technic chain and the light brick (which has been partially
painted black) is there for effect only.
Remember, the gondola was created by David, and he's the one deserving of
the credit!

Robin, I really do like your HP world, nice idea, especially the Hogwarts
Express (I'm actually building one of my own, but you've set level really
