According to a posting on Jake's blog, the Lego Factory sets are available.

So that will be interesting.
But the thing that puzzles me the most is the *lack of building instructions
in the box*. Granted, the order pages clearly states that the instructions
are available only online. But I'm not sure about this move.

I'm practically *drooling* at the thought of this...
One question, tho - does anyone have any idea how this might affect Bricklink
sellers? If I can create my own custom model and have Lego send me the parts,
that makes me less likely to look for those parts on Bricklink.
Of course, Lego might charge more for the parts than they sell for on Bricklink!
It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

It depends on how the models are priced. If it’s a flat X cents per piece, it
will probably be overpriced for everyday pieces, but cheap for odd pieces.
I’m guessing we’re going to see a pretty restrictive palette on these things,
though - probably with per-part limits. No sets made up of 300
1x1 slopes.

I personally think is a huge mistake and unless these sets get cheaper, will
probably prevent me from buying them. I really wish they had been released
individually. I am much more likely to purchase sets under $20 than sets in
the $50 range.
I am really disappointed in the Master Builder program not having printed
instructions. Building a dependency on LDD is a huge mistake IMHO. I still
can't get it to run.

John-
TLC makes 1000s of elements in 100+ (hopefully to be cut in half) colors. That's
a lot of theoretical permutations. In any one year, they hardly manufacture a
few percent of the possibilities. If they don't make it, we can't buy it (and so
far, we can only "bulk" buy a few percent of the parts they make in one year,
i.e., we can buy a few percent of a few percent).
So, as long as ABS doesn't spontaneously disintegrate, there will be a plenty of
need for BrickLink to shuffle non-current parts around the community. And for
current parts, the BL sellers breaking down huge numbers of new sets at close
outprices will always be cheaper than buying from TLC. I see no real impact at
all, except for the onesy, twosy buyer of new parts, which makes no real impact
anyway.
