I know I've complained before about the lack of a "Window System" in Lego.  The
last system the 1957-87 classic Lego windows went out of production in 1987,
with the exception of the 1x2x2 windows, which are still produced.

Mostly my complaints have garnered few responses (pro or con).  But it finally
dawned on me over the weekend that one reason is that not too many of you have
had the pleasure I have had in the 60's, 70's and 80's (and beyond) to use the
classic windows as they were intended.  Namely to mix and match and create new
window combinations.

If you look at the 9 classic windows, all but the 1x6x2 Shuttered windows can
easily be used with other windows to create custom windows.  Over the weekend I
sketched out about 100 different window designs using only the 6 smallest
windows (1x1x1, 1x1x2, 1x2x1, 1x2x2, 1x3x2 and 1x4x2).  The actual combinations
that they could be used in numbers in the thousands (or greater), but I chose
ones that were tasteful looking.

Even though I am too busy finishing up on the Lego CD, I am going to have a
friend build a "tall wall of windows" that shows the 100 or so different window
combinations.  There will be 3 major windows at the bottom of the wall.... 1) a
Gothic window that looks like the Harry Potter Hogwarts School dining hall
window (using about 40 of the 1x1x2 and 1x1x1 windows), 2) a Romanesque window
from New Yorks Grand Central Station (using 20 1x2x2 windows), and 3) an Art
Deco Office Tower window (using 35 1x1x1, 1x1x2, 1x2x1 and 1x2x2 windows).  And
of course there will be another 100 or so that show some of the versatility of
having a window system.  Some of these other windows will look Gothic,
Romanesque, Frank Lloyd Wright, Palace of Versailles windows, etc.  And with
over 11,000 classic windows in my own collection, don't expect many puny
windows!!

Then once it is done, I can show it on Lugnet.  Then you folks can see what
possibilities there are with Lego "THAT YOU DO NOT CURRENTLY HAVE".

Why am I doing this?  Because today windows are the weakest link in the Lego
System.  Ask yourself this question:  Can I build my own house with the current
selection of Lego windows so that it ACTUALLY looks like my house?  I think that
the answer to this question for 99% of you is NO.  For TLG, that should be an
embarrassment, especially since they pride themselves on being the worlds
greatest building toy.

It's time TLG came out with some real window styles for the modern AFOL!

I have to agree with this, but coming at it from a slightly different viewpoint. I need BIG windows. the 1x4x5 (1) is the biggest single paned window that has been commonly available (2) correct me if I'm wrong) and thats what I've used for (URL) (...)
