The first sort was on basic types, technic bricks, plates, studless thick
beams, studless thin beams, misc (pins, axles, connectors), gears, electric and
pneumatic. The second level sorts are by more detailed part type (e.g. technic
brick size). I do not sort by color unless it helps in utilization of my
storage facilities.
I'm about 1/3 done with the sort. I enjoy the process and find it relaxing.
It is an ongoing thing. As I'm building things, I typically try things that
don't work, and discard the ineffective pieces into a sort-later pile. When the
pile gets big enough I sort it back into the storage system.
I use shop cabinets with large and small drawers in the same cabinet. I have
six of them. I only sort by color if I have too many of one kind of parts to
fit in a given drawer.

| Thanks to all of you who replied!! Every single reply had a snippet (or better) of useful information. I am putting all of them to good use. - Sorting by color first - Take each color, and sort out the really large pieces, then slightly smaller (...) (20 years ago, 13-Jul-04, to lugnet.general)

| Help!! What on Earth was I thinking? A few weeks ago I looked around at all the various tubs, cans, boxes, and other containers I have lying about, filled with various LEGO elements, so I thought I would be smart (HA!) and inventory it...y'know, get (...) (20 years ago, 9-Jul-04, to lugnet.general)
