A new basic color seems to have been hit by the color shift syndrom: yellow.
When I opened my brand new 8455 Backhoe
Loader, I noticed that some parts (Wheel RC Race Buggy and Technic
Liftarm 1 x 7 Bent) had a slightly darker, and more orange hue.
Here is an unretouched scan of some parts from this set:
I am not that finicky about colors (I am more interested by mechanisms... and
I might even prefer the new yellow), but I think that different hues in the same
box is a quality problem!

Wow. Yellow? I will be interested whether this is just another dirty nozzle or
consistent new hue.
Dirty nozzle means not pure yellow--my yellows are greenish, like they were made
immediately after a blue run. Two bad shades came in the same sealed bag from a
1998 blue tub. Also, yellow is one color that suffers over time. My original
Yellow Castle actually became more saturated.

I don't think it is the case here, since two different kind of parts have
exactly the same hue. And with a dirty nozzle you usually don't get an
homogeneous color. Here parts have a very nice yellow color - but different from
other parts in the same bag.

OK. did you check the color against many older parts?

There have always been some variation in colors. I have seen several hues of
standard red, yellow, blue and white in new sets.
Sofar it has meant nothing!

Yes, they matched the lighter, less red color of most parts in the box.

I hope you're right... though here the difference is small, but quite
noticeable!

Try putting the pneumatic airtank next to another blue brick and see what
happens :)
Did not someone report that the hubs in that set appeared to be made out of some
other plastic then ABS?

Now that I have built the model (highly recommended BTW), I must confess that
the color difference is almost invisible to the unwarned eye. You see it best
under fluorescent light that give a slightly greenish tint to the old yellow
color...

Material of the big hubs seems to be identical to smaller hubs one.

A number of years back (4 maybe), I was sorting some basic bricks from 3033 tubs
and I noticed the different subtle shades of yellow. Certain bricks seemed to be
more primary yellow (whatever that is) and some seemed to be slightly more red.
The difference is ever so subtle and was not noticible unless you had a large
pile of only yellow bricks. These parts were (in theory) produced at about the
same time. I have always attributed it to dye-lot variations from whomever LEGO
gets the ABS pellets from.
Its also worth mentioning that LEGO now gets delivery of ABS pellets in large
tanker trucks (I found this tidbit in a fact sheet PDF file from the LEGO
website). I wonder how they make sure that every pellet of one color is cleaned
out before loading (or unloading) a shipment of another color. What this might
actually be is a few odd pellets of another color getting mixed in prior to the
time the melting begins. Wild speculation on my part, but it would seem possible
based on the huge quantities of bricks manufactured that every now and then a
few might be off a bit.

IIRC, there was some speculation about the material used for the tires,
which seemed less "rubbery" in 8455 than similar tires in previous sets.

Ah, yes! My bad, sorry!

Seems as rubbery as the tires I got with my 8446... maybe slightly more since
they are new and clean !

I know this issue has been discussed before, so forgive any redundancy. After
examining my 8455 backhoe, the larger rear tires (which look just like the
"power puller" type from 8466, but are slightly smaller) are less rubbery than
the power puller version. The 8455 tire material seems to be slightly thinner
and more stiff.
However, the small front tires on the 8455 seem to be identical to the versions
made before. Same sort of rubber, or tire material.
