I agree they (MB) are great value for bulk grey. Unfortunately, it's not the
same shade as Lego grey, so they can't be mixed 'n' matched. Of course, this
may not often be a problem...

Once your collection of grey 2x4 bricks features a 1000:1 ratio of
MegaBloks to LEGO, then it's the *LEGO* that are the wrong shade!  8^)

8?) Not commenting as to which is "right" or "wrong". But if I need to use
1x2x3 slopes, I can't use MB, 'cos they don't make 'em (that I know of), and it
looks pretty disgusting with grey MB alongside Lego!!

Well, for me at least, it depends on what affect you are looking for.
"Natural" rock formation have a dispurate (sp) variety of shades of color.
In this case, MB may be what you are looking for to lend to the illusion of
rock, other than the 3 shades of Lego gray (though the lighter gray is not
that readily available, unless you want 10-20 mosiacs, all with just the
light shade of gray). Also, if you want your castle construction or
fortification wall (which may have been repaired sometime in your storyline
or had multiple quaries to gather material) to have a "rough" or rustic
appearance, this may be aided with the use of these (not fabulous, but
varying) bricks. Within these contexts you may be surprised with the results.
(BTW, if you add in TYCO, you get 2 more differant shade of gray to work with.)
Anyway, I guess it all depends on your perspective.
