I've always wondered why everyone who hates Jar-Jar Binks seems to not mind c-
3po, who is the slightly less annoying Jar-Jar of the original trilogy.

I understand that 3-po wasn't always mugging for the camera, had a few serious
lines, and wasn't blatantly pandering to the child audience, but 3-po was
walking comic relief throughout most of the entire trilogy.  Just as Jar-Jar
was.

He bumbles through laser battles (on the way to the escape pod)every bit as
unbelieveably as Jar Jar destroys the droid army.  Much like Jar-Jar He says
stupid things at the worst times (Like whenever Han Solo is about to do
something cool).  He babbles on about things we could care less about.

They fill the same role in the films, but I submit that the reason that no one
likes Jar-Jar and everyone likes threepio is that we experienced threepio as a
child, and Jar-Jar as an adult. We were hoping that Ep.1 would be more like
the Matrix, than Return of the Jedi.

YOu have to suspend the same amount of disbelief to believe Return of THe
Jedi, as you do Episode 1.  What with all of the Teddy bears with rocks and
sticks, beating up armored stormtroopers with lasers and all.  Jon

Ps, why bother wearing that white stormtrooper armor if an arrow or a rock
still hurts you?

Ummmm, errrrr, you are making a presumption about peoples' ages.  Now, maybe if
you had mentioned Robby the Robot and Forbidden Planet...

You are correct sir.  I, like quite a few of the Gen- Xers, seem to forget
that we are not the only ones on the planet(Grinning sheepishly).  However,
most of the Jar Jar haters seem to be between the ages of 15-30 (another brash
generalization).  Most people I've met over the age of 30 ,with children,
don't quite have such a visceral hatred for him.
I couldn't say anything bad about Robby the robot, or Dr. Morbius, or even
cookie for that matter.  If only Jar-Jar were alittle more like Nova, from the
PotA!    Jon

I think you've pretty much nailed down why people who like Threepio don't
like Jar Jar.

1) Threepio didn't talk in that ridiculous voice. Prissy, yes, baby-talk,
no.

2) Threepio was at times a valuable asset to the adventure.

3) Threepio never stepped in poop.

Jar Jar had no real reason for being in the movie. It would have been quite
simple to rewrite the movie and leave him out completely.

I think a simple explanation is:  Threepio didn't like "adventure" while
Jar-Jar was a "buffoon"  Everyone can respect someone who simply demonstrates
pacifism. (even though that was dangerous and naive at times, i.e. "surrender
is a perfectly acceptable alternative the Empire may be gracious enough t-")
Jar-Jar was basically an idiot whose bigest roll was accidentally destroying
half the droid army. Heck at least the teddy bears had a statagey other than
reveloutionary war style advance.  (you get hit with a big rock wearing a
helmet and see if it doesn't hurt, trust me it does,  also by the time the
imperals regrouped and started fighting as a unit (like they should) they had
already suffered too many causualties to be effective.  The arrows were merely
a distraction that allowed the rebels to free themselves.)
