Hi all,

I present Castle Drachenschlaf, the Castle of the Sleeping Dragon.

There is a story behind this castle, which involves a terrible dragon, a wizard, a magic ax, a sleeping spell, and a princess, but I’ll leave that for another time. For now, I present the pictures.

Many of you saw earlier versions of this castle several months ago, either online, or on public exhibit here in Vancouver, BC. The castle is now complete, with all its towers, and even has an authentically modelled medieval cog (ship) coming into to unload its cargo at the wharf. The design of the castle is based on 2 or 3 of my favourite fantasy castles, with a few other touches thrown in for good measure. Of course, I’ve “borrowed” a few building techniques from a few awesome builders as well.

The completed castle was displayed for the first time at last week’s NWBrickCon 2005, where I was honoured to win several awards for it, including both “Best of Show” awards (AFOL and public vote). However, I think the highest honour for me was the privilege of being sacked by a gang of cutthroat Space (Space!) pirates, who (temporarily) unleashed a plague of fleebnorks, and overran the castle for a few hours. Too cool! I’ve included a few pix of that crisis as well.

I hope you enjoy touring the castle as much as I enjoyed building it! I truly love building castles, and bringing Drachenschlaf to life was a joy. All of your comments and questions are most welcome.

Regards,

Robin Sather

Absolutely fantastic Robin. I love all the finishing touches that you have added since the PNE and Science World. Congrats on all the awards, I know I voted for it. Nathan Proudlove

As if you guys didn’t need more proof of how awesome this castle is, I saw it at NWBrickCon. This thing is awesome, tons of details and the terrain around it is amzing. And even better were the space pirates. what’s cooler than a castle with moonbase corridors?

Holy.
Moo.
Muffins.

That is freakin' cool!  Drachenschlaf is like a text book on how to make
minifig-scale LEGO castles - I'm going to be referring to this for a long time
to come.  Thanks for all the hard work, and for sharing this!

Peace and Long Life,
Tony Alexander

Robin,

I can certainly see why this was a prize winner, the originality and level of detail are great.

I love the cog, that’s an amazing ship for brick (non pirate hull) construction. I love the odd shape of the castle, it’s not just a square with towers. I love the tiny sally door in the hillside. I love the hay wagon.

I worry about the guards standing besides the archery targets, but they do have armor.

Ilove they way you made rounded corners and parapets, I’m going to have borrow that idea.

Gosh, I could have spent a long time poring over this in person, I bet it’s even more spectacular.

Thanks,

George

Wow, that is just lovely! Such a variety of shapes, and none of them boring rectangles. Angled walls, hills, round towers - so much to see and admire.

Great job, definitely worth spotlighting!

This is fabulous. Great attention to detail. As other have said, all the curves and twists and turns make it even more wonderful.

Did you consider mixing new grey and old grey together for the castle walls? (if not on this project, on others?) I build town related things and have mixed the new and old light greys together on a few buildings and retaining walls (I also did this with the two shades of brown) and I think it adds a very realistic touch.

Great work & congrats on the awards as well as creating a magnificent show piece.

Thanks for your comments, all!

I have experimented with using old and new light grey together, and I have to say I just don’t like it (yet). I think I’ll need to play a bit more with it. I did (by necessity) have to use some faded grey bricks, and that sorta came out all right, so perhaps I’ll have another try at mixing old and new. The dark greys are a little easier to use together, I find, but the lights are just too close, and yet too weird together. Dunno.

GREAT Castle! And you make me sick! It’s not enough to build an awesome castle, but then you’ve gotta go and show off by making it into a giant Moonbase© module, too!

Excellent work, I particularly like the height of the base all around... really makes it look like a ‘crop’ from a bigger world. I think that is my faviorite part : ) Though the ninja walls covered by arches look great, the various angles are mind boggling (I’m just attempting my first non-uniform angle) and the cog is a great finishing touch. I also love the small curved steps on ‘the little tower’.

Thanks so much and God Bless,

Nathan
