While sitting on the throne (a la Archie Bunker) and scanning over the latest
S@H catalog, it struck me that the 6095 Royal Joust set is a pretty awesome set
for parts!! It's got great weapons (4 halberd axes, a brown lance, a black
lance, a brown spear, a brown axe, 3 Knights Kingdom shields, a Bulls shield
and a silver long-sword); the cool knights helmet with visor; a black chain;
the stained glass window, three cool minifigs (if you change the kings crown);
and a lot of other cool parts! Personally, I think this looks like a great way
to build an army and get some great parts as well - which is the big gripe
about the 6026 King Leo set - two figs, one shield, no parts. This seems to be
a good set to pick up on sale - for BOGO 50% OFF that's $15 each - not bad for
99 highly usable pieces.

Has anyone else ever taken the halberd axes and cut off the axe part to make a
longer spear?? I did and it looks pretty good - it works great for mounted
spearmen or in a "Braveheart" scenario where the underdogs use them to gain the
upper hand.

Also, has anyone else pointed out before that the knight with the new helmet,
brown facial hair and unique breastplate found only in 6091 King Leo's Castle
and 6096 Bull's Attack has the same torso as the King that came with computer
Chess game. I remember reading a lot of posts from people who were excited that
there was finally a unique King instead of having 10 or 20 of the same guy with
different helmets. So much for him being a truly unique King fig, huh? I guess
this goes back to the Dacta/Time Cruiser theory of using up old parts.

I bought one for $15 just to see what it had, but I probably won't buy any more
unless I see it at $10.  Theres a fair amount of weapons and shields, but it
still seems a terrible expensive way to build an army to me.

I've wanted a pike: the standard spear is too short, but the shaved halberd
isn't bad.  The other alternative is to simply use the lance (same length as
the halberd).

The scottish schiltron formations weren't actually a surprise, but hey, it made
for good drama, and they really worked well against mounted troops.  I had the
swiss pike and halberd formations in mind, so the shaved halberd works better
there.

Yeah.  I paid $20 for one of those guys just a few weeks before the first scans
of the 2000 catalog came out.  (grumble)  I still use my "Chess King" as the
king for my Crusaders/Royal Knights faction, though, because he does have a
*semblance* of uniqueness, at least.  Although the Chess King's nifty torso is
being recycyled there still has never been a head-torso-legs combination
that really resembles that of the Chess King's.

Umm, you must have gotten a different King than I did in your Chess
software.  The one I got has *NO* semblance to the new king 6091...
Different colors and printing ALL around.  Torso and where ever, I'd
call the torso a "fancy gold armor" type printing not the RKII style
(as I and others refer to it)..  The only thing I can think of is that
I bought my Chess software early and maybe they changed production
runs, that is assuming that what the 6091 shows for minifigs on the
one flap in what's inside, I haven't gotten a chance to open it yet.
If its the same king that's in the smaller sets than it is NOT the
same as my Chess King....

We're not talking about the KING from the new sets, we're talking about the new
KNIGHT that is described above. The new knight has the same torso as the chess
king.

Ahhh, I just took another look at the box the 6091, you are correct
sir!  I had overlooked him.  It was late when I sent that reply :^)  I
need to pay more attention, there goes my positively unique King.
I just have to arrange something/someone  else for the job then.

I was thinking that the new knights could be used as special Royal Guard. I
believe they have different arms, legs and face than the Chess King, and with
that new helmet I guess they're different enough.

Hey, what about a King who doesn't dress for war? What if you use one of the
nicer pirate torsos that looks like a medieval tuxedo and have a King who rules
from the throne and does not fight on the battle field? No armor, no sword,
just a sceptre and fancy duds. Just a thought. Some of the ninja torsos would
be nice for this also.

I have looked at these new knights and bulls for a while on scans:

The bulls, cows, whatever will be the Longhorns and make up one half of a
conferderacy of barbarians with the Wolfpack ( another small subset )combining
the two series will make them a force to be concidered by any king.

Now for the other guys:

king leo and his many twins become a regiment in the royal knight army.  An
elite troop like "The Old Guard" or the "Iron Brigade"

The soldiers with the solid breast plate and flat helmet become a regiment in
the Crusader or original lion army much like a "highlander" regiment.  Slightly
differnt from the rest of the army - elite.

also,  the knights (black arms, chain armor with medal on chest) that are
similar to the chess king (red arms, chain with medal) become part of the Black
Knight army.

Still at a loss to deal with the female knight.  Probably have to do some kind
of warrior queen deal.

vr,
don
