(Please note the crosspost - trim your groups when replying!  Comments about
the 'figs should got to .castle, comments about the photography or the camera
to .publish)

Well, I went out and got a digital camera today...finally. It came down to
the Sony Mavica FD83 and the Nikon Coolpix 800.  (Castle readers, don't worry,
there _is_ a reason this is in the group.)

Both cameras were great - the Sony especially is very friendly and easy to use
- but I decided to go with the Nikon's higher resolution (1600x1200) and a
feature set that was more likely to be useful to me.

Anyway, I'm very pleased with my choice, and I've put up a couple of pictures
I took tonight at my LEGO site.  (The address is in my .sig.)  The pics are of
some modified minifigs I made a month or so ago, inspired by the Final Fantasy
series of games.  (I figured Castle was the most appropriate LEGO theme.)  I'm
really pleased with how they turned out (both the figs and the pics.)

On the page, I included some basic information on the photography conditions -
lighting and such - is this sort of stuff helpful to people?  Should I
continue
to include it in other MOC sections I put up?  Or is it just more useless info
cluttering up the page?  Is there other information that would be helpful?
Distance from camera to figs, ISO eqivalent of the picture, that sort of thing?
If there is, let me know.

I'm very interested in your photography techniques!

What are the zoom and macro capabilities of your Nikon, if I may ask?  I'm
looking for a good digital camera that can handle objects closer than the
standard 10 inches.

Well, let's see...the CP800 has a 2x optical zoom and a 2.5x digital zoom.

When I took those pics, I was basically holding the camera about 4" away from
the 'figs.  I haven't really checked exactly how close you can get and still
focus, though.  The way the Nikon works in macro mode apparently uses the zoom
-
you set up the picture and then zoom in on the subject until you hit a 'sweet
spot' for focusing - the camera will notify you by turning the macro indicator
green.  It seemed to be around 2/3 to 3/4 of the optical zoom when I was using
it, so I guess that'd be in the 1.3x-1.5x area.

(I've got to say that the Sony Mavicas have some really excellent macro
capabilities.  When I was testing them out I took pictures from a distance of
about an inch and they still focused beautifully.  I'm not sure how much of a
problem lighting would be for those, though - I took my pics in a Best Buy
with
what seemed to be at least decent lighting.  Maybe Todd or one of the other
Mavica owners can giv emore details.)

Maybe tonight after the NELUG meeting I'll test the CP and see just how close
it can get to the subject, and post the results.

We have taken macro shots with our Mavica (FD-81) from ~1", at full zoom, and
it did a lovely job.

This is what I've been waiting for.  Hoping to find some reviews of it
soon.

I have the Coolpix 950 and love it. It does 3x optical zoom (and some sort
of digital zoom, which is mostly useless unless you're really short of space
on your memory card and need a cropped shot) and the macro mode is 0.8
inches to infinity.

Thanks, Craig!  Craigo-lego was definitely the biggest inspiration that actually
got me thinking about the possibilities of painted or otherwise decorated LEGO.
I still think we need a lugnet.blasphemy group for painting, sawing, snipping,
and otherwise modifying LEGO parts...

Those are some great 'figs.  You did an excellent job on the painting.  I also
love Final Fantasy (I want beige ponytail hair so I can make Rosa), and these
are great representations of Dragoons.  Personally, I probably would've used
the visored helmet, but that is just personal preference.  :)

Oh, and I believe Dragoons are European, not Asian.  The armor piece you used
works better, though, than the other one, IMO.  :)

Keep up the good work!

Those are some great 'figs.  You did an excellent job on the painting.

It was made much easier by the fact that they were paint markers - it was a
lot more like drawing than manipulating a brush would be.

I want green ponytail hair for Terra.  I think you're more likely to get your
wish without resorting to paints!  (Although the 'sea-foam' green color that
wound up on one of the Dragoons would not be a terrible match for her hair...
Hmm...gotta score an extra ponytail or two...)

and these

I didn't want to paint a visored helmet, either. 8)  Besides, the 'dragon helm'
is far more ornate, which is what I was looking for in Dragoon arms and armor.
(And if I keep doing FF LEGO guys, the visored helmets are reserved for
Knights!)

Oh, and I believe Dragoons are European, not Asian.  The armor piece you used

Well, the real world Dragoons, as in mounted infantry, were definitely European.
The Final Fantasy Dragoons are considerably different, what with their rather
incredible propensity to leap high into the air and come crashing down on their
opponents, spear first...basically, I actually meant the Asian origin of the
Final Fantasy games.

"Paint Markers"?  I didn't know something like that existed!  I may have to
look into getting some.

Although, if Lego *does* make a beige ponytail piece, you can make her
according to Amano's character designs...along with just about every other FF
female character.  :)

True, they are a Japanese concept, but the design is European.  Japanese
warriors never wore armor like that!  :)
