I have tentative plans for at least one more feature release in the

Jacos question about color scaling gave
me the idea for this. By allowing meta commands anywhere in the model to be
applied as it is processed, different color substitution schemes can be used for
different parts of the model.
So, if you load a custom ldconfig with faded color definitions at the beginning
of the model and you override it with the normal ldconfig just before the last
step in the model, you can produce an instruction image with parts from previous
steps de-emphasized. (Probably works best with separate files for each
cumulative step in your model - as Bricksmith exports.)
Heres a quick example for building the nose of
this jet. LDView understands the
hexadecimal color notation PreL3P outputs. The faded color definitions I used
are pretty simplistic (I think the faded red looks too pink), but the point is
you can define them however you want. You get the idea:
This ability will be in PreL3P 1.3.
