lurker mode. I still check all the models out though I usually don't post.
However, at the urging of a friend I'm posting my latest Bionicle moc here
<http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=126785>
It's another study of organic Lego. Here's some of the text from my BZP post:
"I've been trying to build these open organic type models. I've dubbed the style
"weaving" from something ThraxisJr said once, that building Bionicle is like
weaving. Though how he knows what weaving is like is anyone's guess.
Anyhoo I'm trying to make a semi ridgid skeletal structure and "skin" that
rather than building out from a solid structure (like a Toa body). I know the
end result is somewhat messy looking but I'm pushing myself to build a bit more
free flow. Also I'm gearing up to make something larger which will need to be
lighter as well. I'm hoping this open type style will help me."
| | | | | | | | | | | | | I like it and I think your goals will be realized.
Thanks for sharring.

Hmmm, very interesting. That is definitely a new approach to building. The only
problem I can see is that the skin would be kinda fragile. Of course, Im sure
youre already thinking of ways of making it strong.
Keep up the awesome work.

The rear end is fairly light when compared to normal Lego building so it only
requires minimal structural support. Then I added those straws that Im so fond
of to the legs. When they are twisted around like that they become structually
sound adding support and stiffening the ball socket legs.

Its kind of weird how strong the substructure becomes with minimal connections.
The skinning is more of a cover on this one rather than integrated structual
elements so the tails tend to fall off here and there. But yeah Im already
working on ways to strengthen it.
That said Im concurrently trying to make a structure that is fundementally
flexible with the skin elements sliding over each other like plate armor. As
with most of my building I have no idea where its going but Im having fun
finding out.
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Cajun/Phoenix/Xanadu/xanadu01.jpg The tail
on this one is not skinned yet but is an example of the flex/floating point
articulation. Essentially it bends back and forth (think wagging) without losing
structual integrity. Its still just a WIP though.

Ewwww...
I need a really REALLY big shoe!
The little slug thingies as fangs - brilliant! I also think the eyes are very
effective.
I can see this widow spider blending in with a larger version of your "Rack"
unnoticed until some prey happens by...
Where's my can of raid?
Did I ever mention that I really hate spiders?

That's sweet. I've always loved the idea of different builders not only building
with different styles, but in different "forms". I think it sounds cool.
This weaving business is pretty awesome, the flowing lines through the legs give
it a cool feel. I think the 1 x 1 clips you've added make it look more sinister,
(I'm guessing they're to look like hairs?) but break up the flow a little a bit.
What if you used black minifig hands or something? (assuming that those are
intended to be hair)
The big sack on the back looks thoroughly disgusting and as chris said, the
fangs are cool.
Awesome stuff.
BTW I remember you mentioning once you listened to Audioslave. Have you got Out
of Exile yet? (not much of a chance seeing as it came out this morning) I like
the sound but the lyrics aren't nearly as epic or immersive as last time. Tom's
solo's are still the coolest thing on the block though.
See ya

I like when someone has a particular style, but I also like builders who push
themselves to make really new things as well. It's just too easy to fall into a
rut...I'm rambling...

The clips are "hair" I guess. I was just seeing how a texture might look there.
It's still always an experiment when I build. Weaving is so much more free ended
then how I normally build. It's this weird layering thing...I can't even explain
it well.

I'm not sure Lego is hip to super evil models. I can see it now: Lego Giger
themed sets. ;-) Actually I'd love to help rebuild this robotic band they had at
LLC way back when...so if anyone at LLC is listening feel free to send an email.

Awesome Bryce, it reminds me of a cross between H.P. Lovecraft and that big
spider looking thing from The battery-fields in The Matrix. Technique aside,
your MOCS consistently do something very difficult; convey a feeling...usually
some flavor of dread.
Bionicle? Wait a minute....its made of Bionicle? Well, in that case, I take it
all back. Its horrible, and so are you ;)

Guilty as charged! I had two gattling guns as the front legs but they just

Looks even better completed than when you were building it. It's also quite a
bit larger than I though it would be. I love the spider butt. ;)

Messy looking, yes. Strong as all get out, yes. Can it be stronger? Not in that
form as I showed you the other night, but it can be stronger. Strong and light
weight...that's what you've built.
Ultimately, I do think this style will help you in a couple of ways namely
strength and versatility in building.
Excellent job, man.

Why would you need urging to post such an amazing creation?!?!? This is
construction is simply amazing. After seeing your previous work, I hoped you
would extend the forms and style to encompass some new organic creations! I
never imagined lego could ever be used in such a way, but the advent of Bionicle
(Bio - Life/Living?), meant there were some intresting possisbilities on the
way. I am not a very apt builder when it comes to Bionicle, although I do own a
fair bit of it, I rarely use it. You have inspired me to dig out the Evil
stuff and see what takes form!
All in all one awsome creature. I likened this to Ungoliant, the giant spider
