Intermittent Outage Notification: Lugnet Server Move

Dear Lugnet Community,

after roughly 8 years of residing on the same server platform, it has become
inevitable to move Lugnet contents to a new server.

We have had the odd intermittent outage because of server components failing,
but much worse is the fact that we are unable to keep the current operating
system platform at the required level of security. Patches have long since been
discontinued so for every vulnerability we have to build the necessary packages
ourselves which is a long and tedious effort.

We have acquired a new machine that is suitable to support Lugnet contents for
years to come. Initial tests look promising, therefore we are planning to move
the entire site to this new server within the next couple of days.

This notification is to advise you of the upcoming change, and the fact that the
move may leave to intermittent issues in posting new articles to Lugnet.

If all goes well, you should be able to post new articles to Lugnet at virtually
any time. If it does not quite go as planned, there is a risk of articles being
posted to not actually make it to the live site. Posting via NNTP or Email is
particularly at risk as we have to replace the entire mechanism with updated
software. Posting via the Web is probably going to be the most reliable approach
for the coming 1-2 weeks. Please save a copy of what you have posted and should
you find your article is missing, please try to repost once we send an "all
clear" message in reply to this announcement.

Work to move the server contents will begin pretty much today (March 6, 2015) -
this coming weekend (March 7/8) is likely to see a first attempt of switching to
the new server. I am not 100% confident that this is going to be successful on
first try (previous attempts in recent years had a lot of issues from which I
believe we have learned a lot), so we will probably be switching back and forth
a few times for testing purposes.

Contents should be accessible at all times, but the described effect on posting
may occur.

Thank you very much for your patience and support.

Thanks,
Jerry

All,

if you are reading this, you will have made it to the new Lugnet server.

We are not quite there yet, but things are working reasonably well, therefore I
am keeping this machine online and will be fixing stuff as we move along.

Posting via the web interface seems to be working - the small disappointment
(for me) is that despite the new hardware and most binaries recompiled, there is
still some noticeable delay in posting new messages from the web. I hope I can
figure that out eventually.

Posting via NNTP may be possible but I have not tried yet - I can read
subscribed groups via NNTP all right, though.

Posting via Email remains turned off for a while as I need to re-establish the
couple hundred addresses needed for this service - please bear with me.

Pretty successful day 1 of the migration I should say, hope it stays that way as
I need to turn off the insecure old box soon.

Thanks for your patience,
Jerry

Thank you, Suz

I realize this move will be interesting again to say the least. I finally got
that Perl issue worked around that made us cancel the previous move, but the
mail2news mechanics are sort of broken at the moment (not that it matters too
much as the old machine had them somewhere between clogged and broken for months
now).

I'm reverse-engineering that bit to figure out what breaks. Technically,
news2mail does work, but the authentication does not trigger and we certainly
don't want Spam here.

Some ricochet emails already ended up as Forum spam, so I figure I'll keep email
turned off for a bit. People don't seem to be posting too much via NNTP at this
time.

It's quite probably just tiny bit I'm missing - needle in a haystack thing...
any volunteers who still remember how that thing was set up back in '99?

Thanks,
Jerry

All,

please be advised that posting to LUGNET via Email is currently DISABLED due to
an issue with the mail-authentication mechanism.

Please use the web frontend to post messages.

Thank you.

Thanks,
Jerry
