I have been trying to modify the sets that I have that are like this so that the mini-figs actually do fit into the vehical. The only one so far that I really like the way I have modified it is set 554. It is no longer a tractor trailer type of (...) (24 years ago, 10-Nov-00, to lugnet.town, lugnet.year.1978)

(...) ... (...) Well, these all came out shortly after the advent of the minifig. Prior to that, most 'legoland' style vehicles were made without doors or interior for a cab (There may be some exceptions, I forget). At any rate, they were still (...)
