These look nice, but definitely pricey at over $23 per set of four, even for
a club like ours with a hefty war chest to spend. By comparison, I believe
that the entire bill for supplies to retrofit all of our tables (currently
numbering sixteen 40" square tables) was a grand total of $75. The $325
that we saved on this mod will buy a lot of bricks and/or Guiness Stout.
Ours should be a tool-free leg install (friction fit, but might benefit from
the threat of a rubber persuader) although we will still be using bolts to
hook adjoining tables together. We might have to look into the feasibility
of using spring-loaded clamps on our layout as well.
We still don't use plexiglas. Although it raises our blood pressure a wee
bit during shows, it adds to the accessibility and kid appeal of our layout.
(Funny thing for an over-eighteen club to worry about, I know.) Also, it
wouldn't be a NELUG train show if Tom Duggan's train didn't take an express
trip to the floor at least once.
At our last train show, one of the guys with a nearby layout showed me their
leg design and allowed me to snap a couple of pictures. They used the same
1" square leg posts that we do/did, but had a single bolt into a blind nut
for each leg. This prevents the need to reach under the table when
fastening the legs and saves time fumbling with additional hardware (washers
+ nuts). But before I could propose it to the group, Eric had already come
up with the PVC pipe alternative, which should be faster and easier still.
