Unfortunately I know what you're talking about w.r.t. loosing pieces right in
front of your eyes on the dirt hiding carpets! There is some reasonable cheep
carpet at Home Depot ~$0.70 per square foot. It is short tight looped nap.  It
seems that if you spend more you automatically get "upgraded" to thick plush
nap.

I could use some advice on instalation.  It is going down on cement, no padding.
This sorta implies no nail strips, which then implies no stretching... so how do
you make the carpet lay flat?

When we recently recarpeted my office, after looking at HD roll carpet, we ended
up going with commercial grade carpet squares. Each square has a rubber backing
which is glued down to the floor with mastic. There was no padding, no nail
strips. The advantage was that we didn't have to stretch, and by working with
one square at a time, you can do your irregular work at the edges with
manageable pieces. Cutting something wrong scotches one square, not the whole
roll.  The downside of course is that it looks like commercial carpet.
