some insight.

Has anybody tried to use the new motor with an old motor where they powered the
new 8866 motor FROM the old motor, getting power from the tracks?

As you cannot get the old motors anymore, it seems like one way to keep going
with old trains, or to get the better torque, would be to wire the new motor to
the old motor using the accessory connection from the old motor. But if the two
motors run at different speeds, does that put undue stress on them?

I suppose you could open the old motor, disable the motor connection and gears,
and just use it as a free-rolling truck with electric pickup. That sounds
destructive, but if I have a motor that is burned out it seems like a good use
of it (unless someone knows of a good supplier for the old electric motors used
in the old train motor).

Clifton,

The problem with using a gutted 9v motor is the friction. The motor has a lot of
side sprung friction for the electrical brush power pickups.

I've been successful making power pickups using the ealy style 9v wheelsets.

These worked OK for lights, but has some flickering.
If you cut the axels and respliced with plastic to insulate, and small brass
springs to each side, and 3 or 4 sets, I think you could reliably power a motor.
