I consider all the elements in this set ‘special. They can be used to enhance
almost any modern LEGO train layout, and many of the old ones besides. A
particularly clever feature of the design is that the curves can be used
either way (curve right or curve left), and the straights are similarly
versatile (run right to left, or left to right).

I will add that if you want buy only straight rails, you get a free extra of 8
curved rails (the inverse is also true). That’s a big deal !
