Could they have North on the left, and south on the right, thus when two
come together, each pole would be up against its opposite?
This is the only way I can see it working, but I'm not sure what their
side on strength would be.

It seems like that sort of system would have backward-compatibility issues with the past generation of magnetic couplers, though. If you brought a new mag coupler in contact with (...) (17 years ago, 25-Apr-08, to lugnet.trains)
