Brian & All,

Thanks for all the positive feedback.  Getting started is very difficult.
I was surprised at how challenging it is to design a lay-out at the show
and then fill in the space with buildings, etc.

Indeed. At MichLUG's first show at GATS in January of 2001,

http://news.lugnet.com/org/us/michlug/?n=180

we did pretty much the same thing - a lot of people brought stuff, and we
basically filled in places as we went along. I am not sure if we had an actual
layout in mind or not - we might have had some parts of it using Track Designer.

Question to all Train Clubs.  How do you create your lay-outs when multiple
people are involved?

Well, we use Track Deisgner

http://www.ngltc.org/train_depot/td.htm

You can also use TrackDraw, which is a newer program (And better, if you can ran
it):

once we get a size they can accomodate (It changes from show to show) and then I
start plotting out a layout from that size.

When I find out who is coming to a show, I ask if they are bringing anything
with them, and what room they need. Some might say I am bringing a 4x2 baseplate
area of downtown buildings or a 1x3 beachfront or something, and then I design
something around that. I coordinate roads and train track if needed as well.

Using Track Designer, you have to do some additional work to the image to assign
areas. With Track designer, you can do that with that program.

I print out about 10 copies for the show (You always lose a few! : ) )
and if I do last minute items I wrote on one, I will just copy that a few times
as well.

It took me about 2 or 3 times to be comfortable designing layouts, but after
that, it is one of the neat things about planning for shows. The hard part is
getting everything done for that show!

(...) Scott, Great suggestion. I downloaded Track Designer and in about 15 minutes had recreated the last show. What a great program. Thanks for the advice and direction. (18 years ago, 31-Jan-07, to lugnet.trains, lugnet.org.us.ulug)
