The answer to the question is a Steam Crane:

The crane can pivot 360 degrees, allowing it to reach the flatbed cars coupled on either side of it. The body of the crane is mounted on a gear rack, allowing the crane to move along the base of the car in order to reach the far sides of the flatbeds.

For transport, the boom of the crane folds in half, and the stabalizers flip up out of the way.

Comments always appreciated.

I really like this. i feel that for freelance models of engineering items you really have to think about how it would work, get i this mechanicals right and it will look right. The way it moves along the car is nifty,it reminds me of something I saw on the net (but now can’t find) which had a digger that ran along the train on the tops of gondolas.

Is there anything to lock the boom hinge in its extended position, or is is held in place by gravity? The only improvment I can think to make would be a a cable from the halfway point of the boom to the cabin for raising and lowering it.

The boom itself is on friction pins, so in reality it's held in place by the Hand of God (i.e., if I keep my finger under the boom, it doesn't generally drop anything). I had wanted to put in a worm (...) (19 years ago, 29-Mar-06, to lugnet.trains, lugnet.adventurers, FTX)
