The boom hinge is held in place by gravity. The boom itself is on friction pins, so in reality it’s held in place by the Hand of God (i.e., if I keep my finger under the boom, it doesn’t generally drop anything). I had wanted to put in a worm gear solution to hold the boom in place, but I couldn’t figure out how to make one small enough. I’m hoping to get some ideas from the more technic minded people of NELUG this weekend. If anything good comes up, I’ll probably do a rebuild.

I had also thought about the boom cable idea, but, again, I didn’t really have the space. I may have to look at putting the entire thing on a longer base.

Thanks for the feedback!
