Thank you for all the info Tim. Where could I find out more information
about the new trains coming out later this year and when they may be able to
come out?

Best place is probably this current thread
http://news.lugnet.com/trains/?n=26310&t=i&v=a It was announced last year that
the new trains will be battery powered and use some form of infra red control,
however exactly how this will be implemented is still open to speculation (again
see the thread mentioned above). I believe it won't be until September that they
come out, can anyone confirm this?

Are 9v trains usually 8 wide? Are the six wide trains not as good because
the smaller width restricts the design options?

All official Lego train designs released have been 6 wide (not including
handrails etc). Some people build to 6 wide to be like the Lego trains, others
build to 8 wide (and some build to 7 wide) as they feel that is is more to
scale. Its purely a personal preference (Although it has caused some debate in
the .trains newsgroup in the past!). The reason that the new system may limit
width options is that it looks like it requires the use of a standard (6 wide)
baseplate that incorporates the IR reciever/batterybox. However this might make
it more complicated but by no means impossible to build wider.

Hope that helps a bit
