I don't see this gap, though.  My son is turning 5 soon, and he loves the Thomas

pushing them around to using the controller, but so what?

So, I'm curious: how do we know this alleged gap actually exists?

Joe,

My son just turned five, and like your son, he started playing with
my 9v trains when he was four. Nonetheless, I do not think our sons are
typical; they both grew up in houses packed with LEGO trains.
There are two ways one can interpret the bridge the gap idea. The
first way is, how do we get kids from Duplo Trains to Trains. The second
is, do we have a product that someone who does not own a Duplo train,
and is about 5 years old could enjoy without requiring too large a
parental investment.
To go from Duplo Trains to Trains requires a large parental
investment, and some parents might be hesitant because they don't know
if their child will really keep playing with trains. If there is a less
expensive way to test the waters then they might be more likely to give
it a go.
When jumping into trains at 5, should a parent jump into the world of
9v, which isn't quite age apropriate and is expensive (if you want a lot
of stuff to play with) or should the parent go into Duplo, which has a
bunch of stuff to do, but "expires" at age 6? A train line that is less
expensive than 9v, packed with stuff, and expandable into the forseeable
future looks like a good starting point.
Anyway, I think that there is a gap there that can be filled, it just
doesn't happen to exist in our homes :)

Chris

(...) That's a good point. (And, if you're ever in the Fort Collins area, we should get our sons together; they'd probably have a great time.) (...) That's another good point! Thanks, - Joe (19 years ago, 16-Aug-05, to lugnet.trains)
