LEGO track connector wires: Which way is up?!

In wiring up our layout for DCC this month, we discovered that the LEGO track wires are not consistently polarized. They seemed considerably more one way than the other, but there were some each way. Are they supposed to be one way only, or does LEGO not pay attention to this in manufacture? Anyboyd know?

(...) Ted, I've noticed this as well. It seems to be worse with the older wires not matching the newer ones. I've fixed this on some of my connectors. I pop open the square conector, and reinsert the wire. You ned to remove ~ 1/2" of wire before (...) (20 years ago, 16-May-05, to lugnet.trains, FTX)
