The new small wheels are just under 1/2 stud wide with a hub extension that is
1/16 stud (.5mm) extra. So the overall width is 4.5mm or about .56 studs wide.
The hub extension helps the wheels fit the width of the track better.
A standard 9v train wheel is 1/2 stud wide but has a metal axle to keep the
wheels the proper distance apart to fit the width of the track.
The BBB 17.6mm flanged train wheel has the hub extension accomplish the same
thing.
For those that are really curious, they can download the ldraw file and check it
out in more detail.
I specifically went with a narrow wheel, rather then then the old, wider, 12v
style, to allow more room for things to fit over the wheels and provide
clearance for other parts of the train.
Kind regards,

One question, are the new small wheels half a brick wide? That was the
impression I got from the mention of using a 5 long axle and from the fact
that the Lego wheels of the same size are but I couldnt quite be certain
from the photo. snip
