Guido-

I wouldn’t get too concerned with the “long term” affects of PWM on LEGO train motors for a variety of reasons:

1. TLC already uses PWM in the RCXs

2. LEGO train motors don’t last all that long anyway (we kill a lot of them running trains 5 hours a day, 6 days a week, for 12 weeks at our annual SDMRRM show just using DC). By comparison, the HO scale club across the walkway wouldn’t wear out 1 motor over the same period.

3. The cost and way-cool benefits of PWM via DCC far outweigh the costs of replacing motors.

4. Getting the voltage right using off-the-shelf DCC controllers is a bigger issue just using PWM itself.

BTW, I don’t like the idea of using 1 train in non-DCC mode that most DCC controllers allow. This tends to overheat motors (a primary cause of failure) and makes a audio racket.

Hi, I went through a lot of postings concerning PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) in this newsgroup. My conclusion is that it is possible. However, I haven't seen any description of the longterm (after) effects of PWM on the motor itself. So I have a few (...) (20 years ago, 21-Jul-04, to lugnet.trains)
