Its an interesting idea. You could alternate 5-studded dalek bricks with
1-stud technic tumble-dryer bricks along the centre line.

I had thought that, t would reduce the rare piece count but would reduce the
strength (actually it reduced it in one direction and increase it in another,
hmm does it even need the strength there?)

Have you tried building this for real yet though? I thought that all the
1x2 plates with handles had at least some droop to the side bars, which
isnt shown on this CAD piece. That would cause problems if you use a
combination of them right-way up and upside-down.

There are two versions of this part, the older one? has the droop you mention
and the newer? one has the bars level with the plate

Hi Tim,
That piece sounded unfamiliar to me so I went over to Peeron, and it appears
that youve specd the type 1 version http://peeron.com/inv/parts/3839a They
indicate that it was produced from 78 to 85, which was during my dark age,
which is why it seemed unfamiliar to me. So, you may have wandered into rare
part territory, but your design does look cool and Id love to see it IRL
someday.
Peace and nit-picking details,
Professor Whateverly
