Hi Ralph
I do not think it would be a good idea to have multiple DCC channels. Sure you
can have multiple power supplies (which I think the DCC people call 'power
stations') but each one should carry the identical DCC signal.
DCC packets are repeated at frequent enough intervals for you to have very many
decoders on the layout without too big a time lapse between each decoder
gettings it's individually addressed update packet.
One of the advantages of DCC is that you can just wire you (for example) passenger station lights to a decoder attached to the rails right there and the same for level crossing barriers or anything else on the layout you need to control. This means you hardly have to run any wires at all.
Of course if the load gets too heavy for the tracks you then have to run extra
power wires but it is still not necessary to run any sort of signal wire.
