Hi,
I have been experimenting with some tank cars and wanted to share pictures of
the results.
<http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=45966>
My first attempt was made from round-topped arch pieces and a little SNOT
construction. The tank is a little boxy and reminds me of the water tanks from
large steam engine tenders. The top lids are based on the James Mathis design
from his corrugated tank car, very nifty. (All of my hinges were bigger than
the lids.) I used the base of a 2x2 bearing under the lid to make an opening
but it is hard to see in the pictures. There are also a couple of shots of the
internal brackets that hold it all together.
The second attempt was inspired by the James Mathis corrugated tanker and the
idea posted by David VinZant. I wanted to keep a circular shape and 6-wide size
which eliminated a center beam and any flat spot to attach wheels or a top
platform. After playing around with my first round piece and some 45 degree
slopes I came up with a way to mount things to the cylinder without any awkward
gaps and decided to give it a try. I am happy with the way they turned out and
would like to hear what others think.
Thanks to James Mathis and David VinZant for sharing their ideas and if I have
overlooked someone else's post with similar work please let me know so that I
can make proper reference.
Cheers,
Casey Mungle

| I really like the corrigated look of the second design. Very nice work, and fabulous use of otherwise useless pieces! They look like the perfect tank cars for carrying things like liquid nitrogen and other high pressure items. Good inspiring work! (...) (21 years ago, 30-Jun-03, to lugnet.trains)
