Hi all,

I'm currently working on making a train layout again since a very long time.
(From the preliminary sketches it's already been decided I'm going to clear
out my attic to make room ;) )

I am aiming for something a bit more interesting than just a loop or a bunch
of loops with some sidestuff. So at the moment I am facing two problems:

- reversing loops (large scale, ie. a roll-on roll-off station)
- running multiple trains

I've looked around for info on making reversing loops but all I can find is
for 9v (I'm making a 12v layout) and seems to be meant for relatively simple
layouts. Switching the polarity of the main track (if there is such a thing)
isnt that pretty if other trains are also running on it for example...

At the moment my best idea is to bite the bullet and implement an extensive
block control system. This will allow me to run multiple trains and control
them independently, allows for reversing loops as well (no main track to
worry about!) and as a side-effect it solves another problem for me: track
resistance. With every block isolated, only the blocks with actual trains
running on them will pull power and all the blocks without trains on them
wont reduce the power by adding track resistance.

Before I pull out my hacksaw though, is there anyone
with some hands-on experience with such a layout with 12v track?

any tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated!

There are various block control systems, originally designed for model
railroaders that do NOT require alterations to the motor blocks. I have
a huge article here about one such system, designed for a dutch
modelrailroad magazine called "Railhobby" Designed for DC operation ,
with signal modules etc etc.

As for a reverse loop, also look at model railroad catalogs. Several
firms have special devices to handle these things. Again, all external
so no need to open the motors. You might need to make a few cuts in the
current tracks though, but I'd see that as being much easier and less
costly.

Drop me an email if you're serious about the block control and I'll see
if we can arrange something.

(...) Since I had a few enquiries about the system, I scanned the pages and put them up on my webserver (URL) in dutch but the electronic freaks among you should be able to understand it. -- Jan-Albert "Anvil" van Ree | (URL) (22 years ago, 9-Dec-02, to lugnet.trains)
